Thread: Gearbox splines internal and external |
10/07/2022 17:45:20 |
The spline shaft is about 99mm diameter with 44 teeth. Could I use an involute cutter for this? Never used one before and if so how do I know which one to buy? As in the photos it’s roughly 3.3mm deep, can this be cut in one pass. I’ve got a Bridgeport mill and dividing head so easy enough to calculate the revolutions. |

Hi there Ive got an external splined shaft that’s stripped the splines. Was thinking to machine a new spline shaft but would it have to be hardened after machining. It’s about 100mm diameter by about 150mm long about 30ish splines. Also the hub splines it locates into has stripped about 5 splines of it. What type of welding rod would one use to build back up to remachine. |
Thread: Machining internal thread |

Im needing to machine an internal thread so a hydraulic ram can be screwed into it. The outside diameter of the thread of the hydraulic ram is 4.1/2" by 12tpi. What size of internal hole do I have to start with before threading. Can machine external thread no bother. Using an indexable thread cutting insert. Have a Zeus book but just insure what measurement I use. Thanks in advance. |
Thread: Sharpening reamer blades |
10/09/2017 22:32:17 |
Thanks might have to invest in one of them next. Would it work if you made some sort of jig with the correct angle and rub them along it on a sharpening stone. Just thinking out loud. |

Does anybody have any tips or homemade grinding tools they use for sharpening Taylor and jones type expanding reamer blades? Or what's the best to do? For example how do you get all six blades sharpened so they are the same hieght. |
Thread: Cutting/boring bush |

Thanks yeah that what I was thinking but what shape should I grind the cutter to get the best result. I.e. Large radius , relief and speed etc Edited By Rocketman on 18/08/2017 18:59:45 |

50mm bore by about 50mm deep. Yeah a vertex adjustable boring head which has 18mm holes |

It's a copper coated small end bush. I assume it'll be steel. Only got to remove about 0.4mm |

What sort/shape should a cutter be boring out a copper coated bush in a milling machine. Was going to use a piece of 6mm hss. |
Thread: Phosphor bronze v oilite |

Was going to order some bronze for making bushes. Where's the best(cheapest) bit to buy it? Is there much difference between the two? Advantages etc. Been looking on the local site and they have phosphor bronze grade saw-660,lg2 & rh7 doesn't mean much to me. |
Thread: Hydraulic piston seal |
29/07/2017 23:14:40 |
Very interesting! Thank you. There doesn't seem to be any scoring etc on it. Would you reckon I would get away putting it back together carefully and replacing the orings and other seals. |
29/07/2017 22:19:16 |
If it not allow please remove as it's a bit off topic. Anyway dismantled hydraulic cylinder and made new rod, before I reassemble I was going to replace the seals, does anybody know how this hydraulic piston seal comes off? It looks bronze type and doesn't seem to be split. I've tried putting a pick in the small half holes around it but doesn't seem to spin around. It's off a jcb digger and only about 30mm in diameter. |

Hi quite new to this forum. Was looking for some advice on what to do with my bandsaw base where the blade comes down on. Pictures below. I've got a bridgeport type milling machine that I've thought about using to machine flat but don't know how to secure a new piece of metal in. Or should I try and weld it back up then machine. Just so it looks better on the eye. Wondering what ideas you boys have. It's cast iron. Thanks in advance.
