Thread: 5 BA Cap screws |
21/03/2021 10:58:45 |
the GPO used odd sizes of BA both to deter theft and make it more awkward for unauthorised access - likewise many electrical suppliers - the choice of the M3.5 for domestic electrical outlet fixings is a hangover from the use of 5BA |

"Perhaps I should be a politician..." do you really want readers to lose all trust in your answers? |

Google has managed to privatise what should be public - as to surveillance capitalism we can see how it will develop by looking at China - yes you can have a social network but only on party terms, what you do is tracked and any rule breaking wrecks your credit rating + job prospects. |

well I guess we could commiserate with the editor on seeing his photo on the front cover - working himself to the bone yet still going round in circles. |

Thread: Windows for the scrap bin? |
18/03/2021 16:13:35 |
I switch my Linux harddrives as needed or convenient between my various laptops - just duplicate them on a small duplicator, alter two files to give it a new name and install in the laptop or desktop of choice. Same approach is used for RaspberryPis tho here just use dd to copy image from a copy on a harddrive to the new memory card - why do people put up with windoze? |

Don't worry about windows users, they usually have some insurmountable lockin that prevents use of Linux - eg our Editor will no doubt mention the problems he encountered in past with Linux. But seriously there are many high cost commercial programs that lock purchasers into Windows even tho there are a growing number of alternative community supported alternatives. Linux is mostly free of the 'report back to base spying' of many Windows programs |

Re Circular saws the Americans, it seems, do not believe in guards on such and apparently these naked rotating blades do much damage - tho the use of unguarded saws in illegal in UK there are still American publication that demonstrate the dangerous use of unguarded saws on sale in WH Smiths |

Thread: Axminster tools to discontinue their engineering courses. |
15/03/2021 14:48:16 |
SMEE pre-covid had some courses designed at this level but I understand that hands-on tuition rapidly falls foul of H&S and thus insurance. Possibly some videos blessed by authority as to their safety etc may be one approach as we have seen just recently the destruction of an not cheap specialised ER nut due to non-understanding of its operation. Maybe I was lucky in the one local authority course I went on many years ago but it was woodworking for newbies using manual tools so guess avoided the attention of those who signed up purely for access to better machines and was very useful - I near daily sit on the workshop stool constructed so many years ago. "Small chips my vacuum can pick up but bigger bits clog the hose." try to find a smooth wall tube and connect this to a old cyclone rescued from a defunct upright vacuum cleaner (tho I suspect any air tight rigid box would do) and connect this to your vacuum system Is there an ally magnet? " NO - the metal sorter might well have worked on similar principles to metal detectors in detecting the changes to a tuned RF coil. |

as others have said MDF is a pig - hard on cutters, you need very good dust extraction as you definitely don't want to breathe the dust thrown off by routers - make sure the router has good extraction as the fine MDF dust will take days to fully drop out of the air. |

maybe the endmill is blunt? or possibly the mild steel is not 'mild' |

the one with two wheels + a sisor like action to adjust to the bar and one that will fit in the tool post - the WM180 doesn't have the power to handle the single wheel type nor is the tool post big enough to take most - I bought mine I think from ARC but WARCO do a similar type but even then needed to mill part of the holding bar to fit the 180. There are several designs that you can make yourself Warco sell the hardened cutters - there was an interesting design by Jacques Chirac? in one of the mags abt 3 years ago that used non bevelled wheels to cut rather than crush the metal |
Thread: Building a small bench |
07/03/2021 10:23:52 |
I built my benches from a design in "The Home Handyman Encycopedia" which I bought in 1978 shortly after buying my 1st house - the benches (3 thereof in my cellar workshop) designed for woodwork but eminently sturdy enough for metal work has served me well for last 35 years simple to make and built using standard sizes of timber + ply - the only change I made was to go for thicker timber for the legs so that I could use larger feet on a M12 thread using a 6mm small plate at foot of each leg tapped for the M12 though the weight is born on the M12 adjusting nut with small screws into the end grain - much of their stability was achieved thru use of 12mm good quality ply panels (tho that is now both quite expensive and difficult to find - the chinese ply is cheap and usually nasty) |
