Michael - what else would one expect from a Jesuit. Yes he has a regular back page 'column' in the Tablet.

just look at "all threads" - box on right of screen under 'latest posts' and then follow to FAQs - obvious once you see and realise you have to put photos into an album then from there to insert into a post.
Thread: Buy a book or download free
03/03/2022 15:27:15
it is not illegal,as far as I know, to sell by auction or otherwise previously purchased books still in copyright - otherwise much of the 2nd hand market would be in trouble. What is illegal is to make a copy of the book and sell that.

Thread: At last : Some intelligent engineering to mitigate a climate problem

similar schemes are, I think, in use in UK - there was a very similar system erected when the Wey threatened to overflow in Guildford a couple of years ago.
Thread: Vickers Metropolitan Capacitor Motor 1/4 hp BKC 2410

Try https://www.model-engineer.co.uk/forums/postings.asp?th=103028 to see how to post - a photo of motor plate showing power etc would be a good guide - often the size of a cap is marked on these plates.

Thread: Windows 10 "upgrade" to Windows 11 Anyone tried it?
28/02/2022 17:41:34
sometimes I wonder just how much people will put up with from MicroSoft before finally deciding that enough is enough.
Thread: How can I cut a 0.75mm radius on a piece of soft rubber sheeting?
25/02/2022 10:08:10
maybe this poster could contact John Smith as he too seemed to need highly accurate radii.
Thread: shaper and planer gauge

Before the local auction house turned to on-line only I would go + look at these returns which usually occupied their own sale - many of the faults were easily rectified and often in my opinion were the careless handling of the original buyer - I wouldn't however bid on anything sight unseen as all too often a key part was missing or damage deliberately hidden.

name the seller as well as leave a poor comment - can you claim back the money ?
Thread: Acceptable run-out on Axminster SX1 milling machine?
21/02/2022 08:44:31
there is a lock on the head gib that should always be set once you have set the required height setting, the drawbar should be fairly tight (that's what the supplied spanner is for) otherwise the cutter can be drawn into the work
Thread: What are the yellow fittings please
21/02/2022 08:17:51
the outside track is power compatible with the national rail 3rd rail systems that share the track in many places, the inner rail is a return as LT run a very dense service and this allows more trains/section whereas in the non-LT 3rd system return is via the running rails
Thread: Acceptable run-out on Axminster SX1 milling machine?

I use ER25 from ArcEuro in my SX1 Mill no problem with them - Axminster generally are pricier than ArcEuro (not always for better class) but generally they supply acceptable material - seeing a cutter wobble suggests something is at fault - did you tighten the head as that will give rise to wobble? - on the small low mass SX1 tighten every gib that is not is not required in the movement.

Thread: New workshop - Quart into a Pint Pot!
08/02/2022 12:58:49
personally I'd avoid dual use of a vice for metal work and wood work - metal work tends to be oily which is often the last thing you want on woodwork - also on a woodworking vice it is common to inset the fixed jaw so that a wooden rail along side of bench can act as the fixed jaw with a wooden cover fitted to the moving jaw - both these will be easily damaged if in contact with metal.

Thread: Computer help required

I never understood the exceptionally long windows update time - I run a MX linux system and keeping it fully up to dates takes maybe a minute, usually less, once or twice a week
Thread: Hand Held Magnifiers?
05/02/2022 13:11:58
I'd consider a USB microscope - small easily mounted on a flexible arm - most households have an old laptop that can serve.
Bit more expensive but useful elsewhere are the inspection camera with small detached monitor
Thread: Electricity Supply - Fun with Statistics
04/02/2022 19:49:23
Pre war many large factories would generate their own power (eg belt drive to many machines) also the domestic market would expand eg coal driven ranges replaced by electric cookers, much more labour saving devices and from early 50s the omnipresent TV. I recall my father buying a washing machine in very early 50s, a TV at Christmas 1952.
Thread: Cowells 90ME 14x1.5 backplate question

Brian Perris would appear to have a hand in many designs including those to be sold under different names - possibly he over extended his small company as Cowells seemed to have picked up the company and assets in a fire sale shortly after Perris's death - I too have a late Perris ME90 but without the screw cutting extras - as many have said a great little lathe
Thread: Cyclemaster engine rubber bushings

Makes me feel old I had one aged 16 in very early 60's - the roads were quiet then but I certainly wouldn't feel safe on one now. But even after 50 years I do miss my Honda CB72.
Thread: Anybody else remember Chuck the Muddle engineer?
30/01/2022 15:16:58
our editor had a spate of republishing them in MEW (presumably they were cheaper than new articles or maybe in lockdown there was no editorial staff)
