Thread: Seeking someone to make a component (spacer)

That's what I like;
wake up in the morning, and before I've finished my first coffee I've learned something new :-D

Thread: Keeeping Machines Clean, New idea or Old?
08/05/2015 14:37:19

If I'm iron dust or using a grinder I may wrap a sheet of kitchen foil round the lathe bed, but mainly I abuse a trusty old henry hoover for the end of session clear up. Maybe once a week I wipe it all down and oil it.

Reece, I would hazard a guess that you have blown one or both power transistors (mosfets),. They both need to be replaced as a matched pair. You can test them in situ, if you look on the LMC site there is a pdf. on drive board testing.

Not an 8 pin din is it? they come in various configurations.

Maybe some opto-isolators would help?

Thread: Making a weird connector

I would think it is a standard connector too, if you know a friendly electrical engineer it would save a fortune on 'small order' charges.
If you do end up making one try Polymorph plastic, mouldable at 63C, sets like nylon.

Some years ago Holts sold a product called 'Seek and Seal' for car windscreens. The idea was it would run into a perished rubber seal and set. As with all these things the surfaces had to be clean and dry.
It worked well as I recall.

If you can get the belt to stay on. Or go for a friction drive, a rubber roller on the motor bearing on the hand wheel?

Have you tried timber for the tripod? damps out vibration quickly, light and stiff.
A basic 'crutch' leg tripod is the simplest thing to make but not telescopic.

Otherwise the local aerial installer may be a good source of tube, ally and stainless.

Thread: What did you do today (2015)
04/05/2015 18:24:48

not model engineering but at least it's amateur metalwork....

swept hilt rapier jc.jpg

It's a swept hilt rapier for one of the Sealed Knot guys, tool steel blade, BM rod for the hilt, bone handle plates wrapped in twisted wire.
What I like is the variety of approaches for these jobs;
" a friend suggested/recomended you.. ..."

or
" ..if you get a free moment...."/"if you get a minute.."

or
"Could you do me a small favour...?"

Braze/solder a small pate onto a pipe?

You are correct Chris, Toby is an epileptic wusshound, a collie x lab.
patterdale (1)sm.jpg
Not unlike a JR,  Patterdales are a proud dog of the working man, they are 'good doers' and will live on next to nothing, rats for preference (but they do like Dinsleydale cheese). This one was a rescue, very fierce, completely untrainable though he has calmed a bit. He guards the shed and sometimes will not let anyone in, even me. If it moves he will try to kill it.

Toby the Lab and Milo the Patterdale. Patterdales make good shed dogs and are mighty slayers of mice.

mic pinion done.jpgAll done, I took a leaf (?) from Mr. Stevenson's book and put a tiny spot of weld on, then roughly filed the teeth, then put it on the lathe to turn the max diameter. Then I set up a 24 tooth wheel as an index to profile the teeth. Works fine and I can't feel when the new teeth make contact with the rack thumbs up

Always expect the unexpected.....

You never know what will come through the door next.

Today it's a microscope from Alexander Fleming's lab at Walmer, 3 leaves stripped from the focus pinion.
I patched it up temporarily with silver solder filed to the profile so they can use it.
I shall make a new shaft and 12 leaf pinion for it eventually once I rig a dividing index and grind a tool to the correct profile.

After seeing a good idea on here I've been tinkering around making an 8mm expanding mandrel to hold timing pulleys. Much quicker and more accurate than chucking them every time.
Just tighten or release the cone shaped Allen bolt in a conical (centre drill) hole.
I often have to turn the pulley boss down so can't use that to chuck them.
I shall gradually make a set of the common sizes, 10mm and 12mm, or maybe just make sleeves?

Thread: Were castings cheap back then?

we took the loo out first, we're not silly face 20

Later we did helmet mounts, then got on to tempering the blades but that would be another thread.

How many old locks must I have smashed up for the brass bits?
