Thread: Piston ring gap
28/02/2019 19:27:08

Thanks for the info, I thought I had read a thou per inch bore but couldn't find it.

I cheated and bought my rings but for a 38mm bore, I think they were for a chainsaw engine so my Centaur was bored 38mm instead of 1 1/2 inch to suit.

When fitting the rings this afternoon I found the that without touching them gave a 0.010 gap! Not quite what I had in mind.

I have assembled the engine with the (large) gaps opposite each other and will see what happens.

I guess the rings I got hold of are 'plug and go'!?

Might have to find some others or make my own.

I shall be fitting the rings to my Centaur engine shortly and am wondering about the gap that I should aim for as the construction drawings don't give this a mention.

It's only got two compression rings in a 1.5 inch bore, is there a recommended figure?

I usually take photos with my phone of machining progress but have been unable to post but something must have changed as I am hopefully posting a photo of Centaurs progress with a first trial assembly!

Clive, interesting point you made about using the mount off your vertical slide. I have just modded my cross slide with the thrust bearing assembly (see my other post) and while my cross slide was out of action I thought I would fit the one from my vertical slide, but it was different and wasn't a direct transfer?

I managed to use it by clamping it on the end of the cross slide with milling clamps!

Not sure how the die cast (mazak?) type material for the nut would be heat treated?

That's great then! I thought I might have had .003 of wear in the nut/leadscrew, but if they could have been like that from new! I was considering a new nut to try and reduce the clearance.

I always keep the cross and compound screws/slides well lubed my favourite being Castrol graphite grease I guess it has paid off over the years.

So far I can recommend the thrust bearing mod it makes for a different 'feel' but in a good way.

I have just fitted the Arc Euro needle thrust bearings and ball race to my ML7 cross slide machining the end casting as prescribed.

All went together nicely, gave the thrust bearings a slight pre load and all feels good.

I have measured the endfloat on the cross slide which shows I have 0.003 in of wear in the leadscrew/nut assembly, I thought that wasn't too bad?

I fitted a new long cross slide and feed screw probably 30 years ago but the nut is original from 1951!

My wife hates her stainless steel double skinned mug!
I love mine and my drink stays hot for ages.

Nice useful lathe, good to see you have totally dismantled it for cleaning and reassembly, was it worn?
'Toying' with the idea of one myself!

John, hunted high and low for the drive but!
From memory all it is is about a 4 inch length of 2 inch bar one end has a female thread to fit the mandrel the other has a slot across it to drive the 2 pegs that are the VMD drive pulley. I can't post photos from my phone but have generated a VMD album with some photos of my mod.
I am not blessed with a lot of workshop space which is why I bought the milling attachment in the first place, it worked well but I got fed up with fitting/removing it from the lathe, it works a treat!

Underneath my drip tray I fitted a sheet of 8mm mild steel as a base for my attachment. On the rear of the lathe bed I secured (using the tapped holes) a length of 2 inch by 3 inch bar, to this towards the centre is bolted a section of 6 inch by 3 inch box section which is all supported by studding down to the sheet metal under the drip tray - so none of the weight 'hangs' off the rear of the bed.
I then built up sections on top of the box section to simulate the lathe bed for securing the VMD to.
The photos might show this better than my explanation!

In use I can slacken the VMD fixings and slide it forward so the quill can be over the centreline of the bed, then slide it rearwards, out of the way when turning. I have found though that I normally leave it in the rearward position most of the time.

I fitted a toothed pulley to the VMD pulley and this is driven from a 0.5 hp 3 phase motor controlled from a VFD

If you have a look at the photos I think it will understandable!

John, I will try and find the drive and take some photos of my modification tomorrow.

Thread: Bending cast gunmetal

Thanks, very informative inputs! Sounds like bending cold might be the way to go.
When I broke my original casting I had got it pretty darned hot, not dull red but HOT.
Upon bending it straight there was no give at all, it just broke off!
I have since silver soldered it all back together and the head is now fully machined with no bits falling off!
I asked the question because I have another head casting which is showing exactly the same out of line lug. This one is in dispute with the supplier who have told me the pattern is in error - and has been since 2001!
I am in correspondence with them to try and encourage them to put the pattern right, instead of keep producing incorrect castings that might or might not be recoverable!

Just dragging this question back up!
Am I to understand that correction of the lug by bending is not going to happen?

Andrew, that's quite an adventure an unusual machine!
Is that a 1/2in chuck? looks smaller.
I guess Tauco must have produced quite a range, I know there were 2 models larger than mine.

I have a gunmetal casting which has been cast from a deformed pattern so is slightly out of position on one of its lugs.(rocker arm on Centaur cylinder head)
I had one of these before and attempted to heat it with a view to straighten it out when it was hot - it broke!
Would it be possible to recover this otherwise scrap casting? It's not got to move much, about 2/2.5 mm

Interesting, a few years ago I inherited a couple of JAP stationary engines which I believe were Army surplus from the last war.
I think they were designed to power generators for use 'in the field' - might even have driven one of your dynamo's!
Anyway they were brand new and totally unused, still had manufacturers tags tied to them!
Reckon they were about 200/250cc and side valve design with governors fitted and rope starting.
Gave them some fresh oil and over rode the governor to have them running, started very easily but were quite noisy as there wasn't any form of silencing.
They got sold eventually on the bay.

Thanks for that Swarf, the guy I was speaking to had a copy of that he thought on his PC but hasn't been able to find it! My spline arrangement is obviously different to yours as my pulley assembly contains the female spline to mate with the male extension of the spindle.
The photo of my new quill shows it to be black but washing it off in petrol yesterday revealed a well preserved ground exterior!
Why not use parts on new designs that have proved themselves as being reliable, all this new designed equipment using all new components can't be the most cost effective way of going.
I'm all for recycling!
