Are you cutting brass now? That will grab.

Too much stick out on thin bar stock.

Is the chuck still holding within 3thou runout? If not it may be chips stuck in the chuck scroll.

Check the saddle rear gib has not come loose. Also try locking the saddle and use the top slide to take the sliding cut.

ring mains being 2 x 2.5mm^2 cabled are generally protected these days with a 32A RCB - the 13A fuse is only there to protect the cable from the socket to the device (only the UK has such a scheme - its utility has often been questioned)...

True, but unwise to assume that. My home, which isn't ancient, has an old-fashioned consumer unit with fuses. I suspect many sheds and home workshops have downright dubious electrics. Much depends on who installed it and when...

Dave

Your ring is fed through a 30A fuse as Mark says, you probably have a fuse wire card somewhere in your house to confirm it.

Your house is probably the only non-ancient one in the country that risks burning down when you run a kettle at the same time as the toaster in the kitchen. There is absolutely no need to keep taking the kettle upstairs to boil it.

Interesting…

When I bought mine, I noted that the tape across the box had been ‘reinforced/overlaid’. I assumed this was a ‘factory mod’ to hurriedly replace the plug with a 16A one - likely after comments on here, or elsewhere.

I have just getting around to trying it out - not had chance, really, since buying it.

HOWEVER, I thought I would check a little closer this morning and guess what!?

The power lead is only of 1.5mm ^2 cross section! Cheap s*ds replaced a 13A plug with a 16A rated plug on a 10A rated flex.

Should we be requesting a suitably rated flex? I think so.devil

That was probably a return by someone who wanted a 13A plug.

The previous release of '30A' machines (I have one) were Euro 40A /16A plug versions with the current limiting pot turned down and a 13A plug fitted. The lead is still 1.5sqmm.

Current ratings depend on how much heat you are prepared to accept in the cable. Companies like BT in the 90's were only happy with no heat rise above ambient due to PVC plasticizer migration at 60degC, their buildings have windows and the sun can cause that much heat on it's own. So cables were sized more generously than some of the cable tv firms.

In this case the shortness of the lead mitigates the issue and I doubt for DIY use you will notice much heat in the 5 minutes that you will have it cutting.

Thread: Help please with inherited items

Posted by Rich Head on 03/01/2022 15:22:15:

My wife has inherited a few items from her late mother, which were her late father’s work. The Allchin is love steam and used to be certified, but as he passed some 25 years ago we’re assuming the certificate is long since expired. In addition to the engine and the other models she has inherited plans, books, some tooling (lathe chuck?) etc.

I have lots of pictures, but am not sure how to include them in this post.

Could anyone advise of possible value and how she is best selling these (neither she nor I have any interest in showing and don’t have the room to keep these items)?

Thanks in advance,
Rich

There's not many who can produce work of that quality, your wife should be very proud of her dads work.

Missed your reply Bill, I guess they only wanted to know what they had 'aquired'.

Thread: Tomato seed recommendation?
07/03/2022 16:47:34

Taste is always a personal thing, but we like Orange Paruche F1 from Fothergill's. Also PGk's Golden 'something' are OK.

We had some self setters appear on the compost heap last year, some of which got potted up for a laugh. The results were two different Cherry type, one fruiting on fans over a foot wide plus a couple that went to Blossom End Rot so I'm pretty certain they were Elsa Craig that were dumped the year before for the same reason.

We hose the greenhouse down with Jeyes to give the Botrytis a hard time, plant in pots and use a £30 thermal window opener to keep the heat down.

Final picking in 2nd week of October last year due to the lateness of the self setters.

PS keeping seed does work on some, but you need to ferment the seed jelly coat off by soaking them in water for 2 or 3 days till the water gets all mouldy and nasty, then dry them for storage.

Otherwise known as Back to Black which is a silicon oil spray. Also quite useful wiped on the car door seals when the temperatures drop below Zero when it acts a release agent on ice covered seals.

If you sell the gearbox then the leadscrew will have no support at that end and you will not be able to drive the cutting tools under power either, which makes a good finish harder to achieve.

Your Mill looks like either the old Warco Economy or Major Mill (depending on size, the Major is pretty big.)

Warco should be able to help with the belt type and size if your existing ones aren't marked.

I was recently told by my supplier that Calor are no longer supplying new bottles, just replacing ones you already have. Has anyone else encountered this, or is it just local to west Wales ?

That's a nationwide thing.
