Thread: CENTEC 2B support bracket
11/05/2022 08:46:13

Hi noel,

Yes it will.

As with the vertical heads, arms and brackets from a 2, 2A and 2B will interchange as far as the dovetails go.

The bearing it's self may not exactly line up with the spindle. I have a 2 overarm on my 2A which required making an off centre bearing to get a sliding fit for the arm.

I'm starting to reconsider which engine to build now either a Juliet or a Tich, how many people could a Juliet pull compared to a Tich? Do you think a Juliet is the overall better starters engine? Thank you for all the help

Best Regards Steven

Hi Steven,

What will you do for a running track? All the UK tracks I have seen have the 3.5" track up on pillars so your feet dangle and you can reach the controls without breaking your back.

Tich versus Juliet

You can sometimes get free pallets from your local gas boiler supplier.

Not that hard to find

The flat bed is a small precision ( meaning no lead screw for screw cutting) lathe without any micrometer dials as standard and only one speed.

If you want a similar, but larger lathe to do useful work and you pass south of B'ham I have a T&LM you can have for nothing, comes with 1/4hp motor + micrometer dials + a 4" / 100mm chuck mounting plate and a smaller one for a faceplate it will need to be treated to new chucks and belts.

There's absolutely no difference between Chinese and British watts!

I am quite aware of that. The purpose of the "Chinese watts" quip was to highlight the different ways people specify equipment. This point has been very well stated by S.O.D. in his treatise above. We've had the same thing with amplifiers and loudspeaker (Peak versus Average versus RMS etc) and just about every other piece of electrical kit you can think of.

Not to forget the pinnacle of rubbish that is Watts PMPO.

Caustic soda was supposed to dissolve the aledged Aluminium hydroxide blocking car radiators with engines sporting the latest 1970's joke, aluminium heads with a steel block when most antifreeze was methanol based.

That didn't work either.

Oddly the sellers of greenhouses worked out the solution this problem out years ago - aluminium nuts and bolts.

Hi Anthony,

I'm using a tool-cabinet with drawers, similar to this, for my 120kg milling machine. I put a thick piece of kitchen top on top of it and some angle iron to support it. I also changed the wheels. It has done the job for over a decade, the drawers are handy for the milling machine tools and cutters.

Thor

I did this for a Centec 2A with a Kinchrome trolley from when Bunnings owed Homebase with just a 1/2" chipboard table top to stiffen it. The trolley doesn't care!

However I wouldn't use anything with spindly little wheels.

Perhaps Steve should have put a warning on the front of his video, that it may offend those who feel it's an attack on how much others spend in their pursuit of 'I want it now', which also can be translated into 'I can afford it / look at my wad.'

So trolling can go two ways and actually no one has quite the same point of view as you or car boots wouldn't exist.

Sometimes you need the centre of the table under the centre of the cutter on a Vertical mill and that needs a big machine.

It's a steal because no one wants them in industry due to CNC and not many ME's want them either. Great for drilling holes in a circle on a drilling table with a car jack underneath for extra support.

I don't think anyone has gone to the trouble of working out the optimum feeds and speeds of model engineering size machine tools. I think I have only seen one 'f&s' list that also gave the hp required to use them - it didn't go below 2hp.

When I go to Rapid Metals and buy something that needs cutting it just get slung in the vice on a bandsaw as big as a car and cut, they don't mess with the speed but they do wipe the coolant off.

Don't invite a dealer in. You'll get peanuts.

Sell on eBay. The auction will realise the actual market price for you.

Start at a price that will interest buyers. Don't start too high.

Don't offer a buy it now price. More fees. No value to you.

Wait until the 80% discount on seller fees if you can.

Myford trilever with electronic power feed £699

Small bench pillar drill £39

[Name of machine] powered shaper £399

Etc.

That will get plenty of interest.

If you can, find someone with some knowledge to identify parts. Eg chucks, milling vices, tooling, etc. Don't just give this away with the machines.

E bay is the best place to move stuff. Clubs usually want something for nothing just like dealers, but without their overheads.

If you are not posting an item do not accept Paypal. If they are collecting they can pay cash on collection. You will have no proof of delivery acceptable by ebay so a buyer scammer can lie and claim non-delivery and get their cash back from Paypal as well as keep the item.

Thread: High Speed Bench Drill?
23/04/2022 12:12:50

As Mike mentions, the beauty of a proper high speed drill is that you can drill small holes with the pressure of one finger. If your Bridgeport quill lever delivers that OK, if not then you buy a lot more small drills.

Thread: Which Grease
22/04/2022 12:11:11
Posted by Hopper on 22/04/2022 02:15:26:

80C is too hot to hold your hand on. Bearings should not be getting that hot.

Common wheel bearing grease should be OK as Paul says above. These are usually a No 2 grade extreme pressure grease designed for high temps around disc brakes etc. Or Castrol sells an EPL 2 grease that is a No 2 grease. I suspect the same as wheel bearing grease but in a different package. Use synthetic wheel bearing grease if you want to go deluxe. Unless your bronze bushings are the sintered Oilite type, which would need oil.

Edited By Hopper on 22/04/2022 02:19:21

It's probably a hangover the days when men were men and oil coming out of the ground was a futuristic thing. Engines used to have tallow cups for lubrication, tallow being beef dripping which sets hard when cold.

Ford used tufnol for the big cam gear in all the essex pattern V4 and V6 till they were superseded by the Cologne V6.

The oil pump drive came off the base of the distributor via a hex rod, which had a nasty habit rounding off the flats.
