At first sight it looks absurd but it could be that the company has to deal with mice one minute and elephants the next. However packaging can be a complete bar-steward. Been there, done that.

Interesting that no one is reporting corrosion on terminals after leaving all that time? I must be doing something wrong!

Doh! = the Oh b****r of previous years. I've just been machining cast iron and now my carpet tiles are a lighter shade of grey. If you know Procul Harum's song I'll allow one run through the chorus.

PS: Keeping the job wet stops the dust but then it gets messy to clear the sludge. Don't you just love working with cast?

I've got a lot of tee shirts with Oooops written on them.

Using a few barbell weight's as stock for some sprockets. Got to the point where the tool hit the lettering and knocked the tip off! Resharpen and next onto the Vertex in junction with a Laser to mark out.... Last mark ugh ohh too narrow and I don't have a dividing head. Mmmm

I suspect the reason for expensive paraffin or kerosene in Oz is they don't have cold winters and only use them intermittently in areas of the house not serviced with a fire place. Either that or an electric heater.

From what I've seen, Proxon tools are perhaps meant more for watch making and so might suite 5mm Unimat lathe tools. Their machines are expensive but one supposes they are high quality.

Ultimately you can grind small tools on a small grinder. You can grind any tool on a large grinder.

Ed : Great work mate and thanks very much. You are right that it's a 35H.P. model but there's a good sketch of the track design and that's a plus. I'm supposing that the tracks were pretty standard over the range with increases in proportion to the Tractor.

Now for that trip to Bovington.

Well for what it's worth I bought a well known micro lathe a sort of add hock system enabling the user to make various tools lathe, mill etc.

It was not cheap costing more than my cheapo Chinese stuff by quite a deal. It was supposed to be all singing and dancing however when I tried it on mild steel I found I made more progress using a file. On castings I couldn't get it to go through the skin and once again I had to resort to a file to take off the skin.

In the hope of getting something for my money I use it on small stuff only now or more to the point I hardly use it at all. Therefore it's possible to purchase pedigree stuff and still waste money.

PS It works on aluminium and plastics at least.

I think we are down to installing a shower room, a large chip guard, a full body shave and possibly working in the nude.

There again the way I read it is that might be steel dandruff.

Ultimately extend the workshop into your personal second residence and have er in doors serve your meals in there. (She might be glad of the fresh air!)

Or... Get divorced and live happily ever after doing what you want when you want . Only drawback is you will have to do all the meals, shopping and house work yourself. However since there's only one to worry about there will only be half the house work.

Jason I'm sorry as I appear to have missed that but thanks for your perseverance. I know as much Latin as I do Italian but we'll see. I have less time than I did twenty years ago but I'm a sucker for good sites and models.

Phil, Yes I have been on that site and remember reading that a guy was not best pleased. I also tried to join Smokestack but for some reason their return link back to me enabling me to join didn't work.

The short of it is I'll possibly try getting the major engine parts cast here but that's another story. The rest of the machine is pretty agricultural so shouldn't pose too many problems. Imagine the postage on lumps of cast from the USA and the time it would take!!!!

Hello people, For some time now I've been trying to acquire plans for the:

Holt 1916 / 1917 Caterpillar Tractor.

Strangely this is proving elusive. I have tried to get in touch with Bovington Tank Museum rather than just buy tickets but this dosen't turn out too easy either.

I don't wish to arrive there and be told, "you can't take photo's or dimensions without permission!"

Is there anyone out there who knows where I might get in touch with authority at Bovington or has the plans above.

Get a fine pin punch, open your vice just a tad, lay the blade over the gap and tap the pin out. Presto.

If you look at the pin you may find it's burred when it was cut off so you may need to dress before doing the above.
