Before being too cynical about the Global Shipping Program ... it's worth looking at the arrangement that HMRC has with the UK Post Office. Any import valued at more than the threshold [£15] is subject to VAT, and the Post Office charges you for the "service" of collecting the tax. [... There's more; if you can face reading the document.] MichaelG. Edited By Michael Gilligan on 02/04/2015 07:47:2
If I am to be ripped off I suppose I'd rather our lot had it than Pitney Bowes or eBay. Edited By Roger Provins 2 on 02/04/2015 08:51:11 |

It seems if as a seller one signs up for the "Global Shipping Program" this is the result. Who gets all the cash difference between the charge to the buyer and the sellers actual cost? Roger Edited By Roger Provins 2 on 02/04/2015 06:42:41 |

... indeed! I was stung once and since I make sure, before bidding, that the seller will NOT use this nonsense. Roger |

There are several sellers on eBay.com and they all say they ship to the UK - at a price! Roger |

Thread: Life as a left hander |
21/03/2015 17:13:45 |
For years it was said that Billy the Kid was left-handed. There was even a film about his life called The Left Handed Gun BUT he wasn't. Due to the reverse image of the only known photograph of Billy the Kid, it gave the incorrect impression that he was left-handed because his revolver is positioned on the left side. Someone finally realized the imaged was flipped by looking at the Winchester rifle.

Thread: Keeeping Machines Clean, New idea or Old? |
08/03/2015 05:05:48 |
I've just accepted that machines and machine rooms get mucky. I clean away most of the swarf and oil as I go along throughout the day then have a major clean at the end so it's nice for the next morning. The main thing is to deal immediately with anything that might be a danger, rubbish on the floor, piles of swarf around the chuck et cetera. It is after all a workshop not a showroom and the machines are tools not showpieces. Roger |

Dunno why my last came out green! |

Cubic boron nitride (CBN) plated wheels are the best for HSS but they are initially expensive. However they last a long time. |

I've often have bought into new technology early on but in this case I'm going to wait at least another year for it to mature and for the prices to drop significantly. |

Isn't that the catch. Is both having a North easterly equal Or is both having a head wind equal
Anyway bring on question No 2 Two parting tools, one mounted at the front, one at the back............all being equal...............which cuts better The one pointing forwards cuts the metal better BUT the one pointing backwards cuts YOU better. Edited By Roger Provins 2 on 09/02/2015 15:39:57 |

Yes, but get the finest toothed (most teeth per inch) metal cutting blade you can find. Some people recommend sandwiching between hardboard or MDF and cutting the whole sandwich but I've not found that necessary. Roger |

Oh joy I can still see the metal work teacher as he convulsed red in the face and his fists clenched white at the knuckles.......... I worked in a school for many years and we used to send a bill to a child's parents for damage to school equipment. We couldn't enforce it but many paid up, hopefully with a few strong words to their offspring.

Thread: A better lathe .... |
03/02/2015 05:46:53 |
It's often said that the lathe is the only tool that can reproduce itself and I suppose, with the help of a guiding human hand, it can. So, it should be possible to buy a cheap lathe, use this to make a better one then that to make an even better one - ad infinitum. Who’s done this?

I've been a victim of double sided tape that was almost too good. A hot air gun does the trick. |
