I have an indoor workshop, I have always used old carpet, I have rubber backed mats by machines sat on top of said carpets, sure I get swarf on deck but never found it a problem as I vacuum regularly and always clean machines and workshop at end of days work, if carpet gets too worn I replace it with another old bit, nice and easy on my feet Mick |
Thread: which lathe is this? |
23/09/2014 19:32:05 |
Clive-- the Winfield & Corbett look very similar but on balance the Corbett seems favourite, the topslide on C is the same as mine as is the tailstock, headstock carriage and apron look good and crosslide has th 3 t slots as does mine, I'll have a good read through the text but I'm leaning towards the Corbett. The absence of badging etc is a nuisence something could be hidden under paint but I'm reluctant to clean & repaint as the patina will be lost, all the important parts appear in good nick, bit of a light clean might be in order but she's a working lathe not an exhibition piece---my thanks to Rod & Clive and all who have helped, I'll post any updates Regards Mick |

Rod----sorry what does OEM mean? |
22/09/2014 14:27:47 |
Rod I think you have cracked it, the final version of the Mk 3 long bed model looks good, the headstock is spot on,the carriage etc also look the same, topslide slightly different, cross slide has 3 t slots also good, the tailstock more like the earlier mk 3,so looks like Gramp fitted extension to crosslide, the myford changewheel system plus thread indicator for screwcutting,I have read Tony's website And will send him a photo to see what he makes of it, many thanks to you for your help-----Mick |

Here you go--centre height over ways = 4&3/16"; over gap= 5&7/8"; between centres =18";3&3/4" across ways ( 95 mm?) & a 5/8 bore through headstock mandrel, definitely myford gear train fitted, I have took some more pics and I'll put in the album later, thanks for all your comments, there will also be a picture of my Gramps which is the back of the lathe where can keep an eye on me. RIP XX Mick |

Thanks for some interesting comments gents, I had thought it had drummond / myford features. I did notice that the thread on cross slide is 8tpl but the index collar was graduated 100 thou instead of 125,all threads seem to be myford ie splndle/lead screw etc.I'll take some more detailed pics and send to Tony, whatever Gramps has been up to it is a cracking lathe which has given us both good service.thanks for comments if I find out anything I''ll let you know |

Thread: Shed Lady |
19/09/2014 19:51:57 |
My first shed was a large coal bunker, with a wife and 3 daughters I felt it was prudent to have somewhere I could retire to at least once a month and quite often more!!! Currently I have 3 sheds I can retreat to relatively undisturbed ---Mick |

Agree with you IanT all my machines are old apart from a WM 14 mill.the older m/c are nice and solid, probably as I'm a war baby I always prefer working in Imperial can't get my head around metric or cnc/cad. I have been computer free all my life but my grandson bought me a tablet,I'm still struggling to find out tofind how to use it so god knows what I'm doing, theres supposed to be a picture of mill on this post but I don't know if its here -Crikey how did I do that--regards Mick

09/09/2014 11:15:08 |
I have a model OA which is a very senior citizen, I bought it for £30 from a local business, apparently someone else wanted it and had to make do with another larger m/c which was minus the collars on arbour for positioning and holding cutters so he took the ones off my m/c before I collected it I hope he is happy with them. My query is does anyone know where I can buy replacement collars (they have a 1" bore) ? I have trawled the internet and unable to find them without buying the arbour as well, machine has INT 30 taper, this is too expensive for me, perhaps someone has some lurking redundantly in a dark corner of their workshop they might sell at a reasonable price Mick
