I have done as coalburner suggested and installed "Malwarebytes"and done a scan and all clear, where do all these files come from? Anyhow thanks for advice

Thanks chaps,

allowing for the fact that I am a war baby and are therefore a bit thick around computers I do tend to worry about these things. The page that comes up has a red padlock the https address is red with a red line through it and the legend announces "Privacy Error-connection is not private"with a "back to safety" box. I have scanned with AVG and all seems well, this also happens on maddmodders site.

Hi folks,

I've used above for a long while and been well pleased, however going on their web page today it seems the site is unsecure and I am warned that someone may be trying to hack my info and to get off site sharpish, anyone else experienced this or have any suggestions please

Thread: ML7 Motor - what would you do?
19/01/2015 19:47:30

My eyes cross whenever electrics are mentioned I am a novice in electrics and don't muck around too much with it. Over my 70 odd years on the planet I have collected motors from old twin tubs and the like and they power a Bandsaw/Disc Sander/small compressor/Lathe, an old doe mixing motor powers an Adcock & Shipley horizontal mill and a Shaper I am building is powered by a floor polisher/buffer motor giving a base rpm of 380. I give them a quick strip down & check bearings etc ok ,a check of condition of wiring and a test using my PAT tester every year. I don't understand the different types if it works I'll use it. I well understand trying to retain original equipment though but in I'm not clever enough and am in awe of those who are

Thread: MECCANO compatible pieces, any ideas?

When I was little my Gramps bought me a "Trix"set , similar to meccano, probably not compatible but I had loads of fun with it

Thread: Lathe tools from Hacksaw blades
13/01/2015 09:53:17

I haven't tried this but how about tungsten tipped circular saw blades? Just cut a section with one tooth on it whatever width suits the size of tooth and cut to centre of blade, a toolholder can be made up to suit, quite a lot of tools can be sourced from a single blade, which are cheap enough, and heat shouldn'affect the tip

Thread: thread cutters
04/01/2015 12:49:07

Thanks Neil--I reckon they'll cut a thread ok there is a tommy bar hole in the adj'usting screw I'have to give it a go, incidentally although I check the"remember me"box when logging in why doesn't it? Mick h

Thanks gents your comments sound logical, I expect they will come in useful at some stage

image.jpgI have had these for years and hardly ever used them, hope photos are shown,

I presume the depth of cut is controlled by gradual closing of dies using the adjusting screw on die holder, but how can I be sure that the correct depth of thread has been reached with any accuracy?maybe the female part should be used if convenient, but what if it isn't? Out of interest the equipment is dated 1943/4 and manufactured by --Platt & Brothers of Oldham and Pickford Tools of Sheffield------Mick Himage.jpg

Thread: Hiding in plain sight
20/12/2014 07:22:49

I'm with you Windy, a couple of years ago I had a minor stroke which killed the optic nerve in my left eye, I told DVLA and I had to have a test of my periphipal vision, it was okay and I was allowed to continue driving,I am now over 70 and decided to surrender my licence as I didn't feel safe and like you if I had continued driving and hurt someone else how could I have coped with that. I still have my Landrover and take good care of it, bought it in 98, took it to bits and rebuilt it, would only sell it if I could be sure that it would go to someone who would love it like I do,some people look at lumps of metal as lumps of metal,I don't they are part of my family

Crikey where did all that come from-- must be getting old

I have a series 2a 1970 landrover, if it misbehaves I threaten it with a 2lb hammer and hey suddenly it works again

British engineering at its best, but strangely I call it Herman

Thread: Myford ML7 mandrel speeds
23/11/2014 13:19:52

My lathe (not a myford but similar) runs on the following speeds --485-350-245 and on back gear--100-65-45

These speeds have been adequate for anything I have ever needed to turn, I use hss tools and generally feed manually, I've tried tipped tools and never liked them , the money spent on tips would buy hss tooling which lasts muuch longer,I quite like the old carbon steel tools, give a good finish just need sharpening more often and as for tool angles I use common sense, the tool I use the most is a knife ground approx for steel does just about all I need, apologies to the purists

Thread: Boxford Lathe Belt
18/11/2014 09:05:34

Bob--I've used the link v belting "A" section from RDG on my lathe and a shaper I am building, can be got in various sizes eg 10 or 12 mm, my adcock mill has the link type that has a metal rivet connection, no problem so far can be bought in 1 metre lengths, no stripping of headstocks as needed with continuous belts and usually spare links are left so in event of breakage easy to restore, can make the fingers ache a bit twisting the t bits together,

Thread: How to Face, the end of square bar in mill
24/10/2014 12:14:26

Its a good idea to list all potential causes, work through and eliminate one by one till the culprit is found this can be quite exciting, also its good for understanding your machines and their equipment, I'm self taught and a lot can be learn't from running into snags,I do hope you find out what it is and please let us know Neil

Thread: A plea for prices!
22/10/2014 08:45:24

I like to make as much tooling for my machines as I can mainly because I enjoy it but also cost, I find it hard to understand the the justification for the vastly inflated prices for the most basic stuff but I agree that no prices shown is a nuisance, although as I am a senior citizen I try not to look too hard

Thread: How to Face, the end of square bar in mill
22/10/2014 08:22:58

Seems to me that if this has occured using 2 different machines likleyhood is they are fine,if you have used the same vice then thats where the problem is ((as has already been mentioned), top of vice base not parallel with underside, run a dti over table too check all is well, then set vice and check the top of base (where work or parallels would sit) to see if it is parallel with table,if it ain't check underside of vice for burrs etc,

apologies if I've repeated other advice-----Mick H

21/10/2014 20:17:03

I've just squared both ends of 1.1/4" square bms using 4"vertex vice squared to column with the ends of material sticking out of jaws. I used a 7/8 end mill set full depth of material & a couple of 10 thou passes job done, I didn't take my machine apart when I bought it as some people seem to do to check it over I relied on the tolerance certificate and in 18 months I've had it the factory settings were spot on, I do spend try to spend time setting up work/vice etc,if there is a problem with a machine's factory settings it will soon manifest itself and adjustments can be made,

Thread: Cutting T slots
14/10/2014 09:10:36

Heres other pic - Mick Himage.jpg

14/10/2014 09:06:33

Done on a Warco WM 14, 3/4 by 3/8", done in one pass taking feed very steady, material 4" bms & plenty off cutting fluid with frequent stops to clear swarf, around 500 rpm adjusted till it sounded right, this was my first attempt at a t slot and pleased with it, the WM14 is a sturdy piece of kit and done everything I wanted without complaint
