Thread: Workshop lighting
06/09/2014 22:15:26

Hi, regarding Mike Haughton's article on workshop lighting I would like to add details of the lighting that I use in my workshop & garage.

Firstly I hate florescent lighting and seem to be constantly replacing tubes or starters. I have replaced all 10 units with LED units which I made from 50mm pvc trunking with the led self adhesive strips on the front face and the led driver on the inside of the trunking, with end caps in place the look quite neat. With this system you can tailor the fittings to your own requirements. The smd strips come in 5 meter lengths and in 2700 kelvin to over 6000.

Just a little correction to Mike's reference to the stagecoach wheels in old movies, this was due to the shutter speed of the movie camera.

Thanks for your reply Olly, These comments are giving me a better insight into the usefulness of these machines. I will probably get one if only to use for a diamond wheel setup.

I have a floor standing clarke pillar drill which I have owned for many years and have had no problems with accuracy but I have replaced the chuck as the one supplied is rubbish. So save yourself some cash and just replace the chuck or try your tailstock chuck.

Looks good but can you still read music when you want to play your saxaphone?

Thread: Warco cutter grinder

Hi, is there anyone out there that has or has used the small Warco cutter grinder? I am considering buying one with the attachments for drill and lathe tool sharpening which I have always done freehand but fancy touching up the odd milling cutter. What are your experiences and are these machines any good?

It's funny really as I finished my apprenticeship as a tool & cutter grinder many years ago making cutters for the macine shop auto's and capstan lathes, thats showing my age. So if anyone has any information about these machines I would appreciate it.

I have a heavy duty 12v tyre pump which will inflate a 16" tyre in 4 min, it is nicely made aluminium construction and cost me about £30. I had a quick look on ebay and there is a similar model but twin cylinder and claim 50 ltrs per min but it is £60. Clive

Have you looked at the BAMBI range of super quiet compressors? I've got a twin cylinder one which makes no more noise than fridge, the downside is that they only produce about 1.75 cfm per cylinder and they aint cheap.
