Ian, Any marks or logo stamps anywhere on it? They can be VERY faint but show up in a raking light.

Thread: Another Mystery Tool
02/07/2022 17:36:51

Hi All,

Just going through last weeks auction items and found this oddity:

arctool 1.jpg

arctool 3.jpg

arctool 2.jpg

Comes with a couple of bundles of these copper coated rods which appear to be carbon with a small central hole all the way through.

All I can think of is some sort of carbon arc setup, looks highly dangerous if that is the case.

Help welcomed.

Thread: Used Myford S7 makes £8k at auction!
01/07/2022 17:18:54

Commissions vary widely, I do not know the vendors commission on this lot.

some of the “posh” auctions around here are 30%+ buyers plus 17% + vendors plus lotting fees, insurance , photos etc all on top.

pretty close to 50% of hammer which is outrageous.

dealers and traders have to put their money where their mouth is and take losses on the chin or find another way of earning a living.

Auction house have zero exposure themselves and do not even have to back up their “professional” estimates.

Quite a good game to be in really….

Hi all,

is this a record at auction?

nice used S7 with gearbox, milling attachment, dividing head and HUGE amount of tooling in excellent order just made £6000 hammer price + £2000 commission at a local auction!

Estimate was £1500- £2000

lots of other engineering related items also did very well, I could not get close to any of them but got some nice other items.

Good job on the refurb also, well done.

Chris, " scraped on a car park hit and run "

I wonder if the insurance company misread this as "Scrapped" in error? That would explain their action?

Thread: Beam Castings Completeness Identification?
12/06/2022 17:34:33

Hi All,

Decided to unclutter the previous thread about the assorted steam engine bits.

Now trying to sort out the next set of engine parts to try and achieve completeness and accuracy when describing them. Any help again will be much appreciated.

I think these are for the ME Beam Engine as said from previous thread.

These all seem to go together but not sure about the parallel motion parts?

Also there are these few "orphan" castings and steel part:

If this is proving to be a pain for members I apologize and will happily discontinue asking about these! Just trying to be accurate when I describe them so any buyer is not disappointed is all.

JA, I worked at Stone Manganese Marine for part of my sandwich course at Uni, they used casting pits in the floor for large propellers etc. They were in Charlton SE London.

just before I got there they had a large fire in a huge bin of magnesium swarf, which proved nigh on impossible to put out. I dimly remember them talking about thorium problems then?

Hi All,

Bought this on Sunday at Cheddar Car Boot, comes in a nice leather case which I have re saddle stitched.

Label n it said it was a "Roof Angle Measurer"

Certainly some sort of inclinometer but not sure whether is is missing a handle or mount of some sort.

There is is a half mirror inside that allows the spirit level bubble to be seen, almost like a sextant.

Any thoughts please?

John,

Makes perfect sense, I will edit and improve the photo, thanks so much for your help.

As these will be offered for sale I wanted to be as accurate in my description as possible which is not easy when knowledge is a bit scarce!

I am sure someone will enjoy making the model from these and it is good that they will not be scrapped.

Cheers, Martin

John, Again, many thanks!

Nearly three with the final photo, just need names for the bits with an X and any mistakes I have made to be corrected please.
