Thread: Myford S7 Saddle Lock Query |
24/04/2020 07:13:39 |
Hi All, My S7 had the Hemingway saddle lock conversion fitted to it which worked well. I had to remove it when I fitted the DRO to the lathe and have managed (quite well...) without a saddle lock until recently when I noticed that some cuts were not so good any more. I still have the original small eccentric Myford part that goes under the rear rail and have made a 5/16" BSF bolt with a thinned head to fit this. I have also drilled each of the flats with a 3mm hole to take a small tommy bar that I can loctite in position when I have the correct adjustment. As there is very little room for access at the rear now the DRO is fitted I am having trouble holding the eccentric while I screw in the bolt and cannot seem to get it to lock the saddle. I think that this is because I have the small step on the eccentric wrongly positioned but cannot see which way round it is supposed to go. When I know this I thought I would drill the opposite side to take a small bar temporarily that I can hold while fitting the bolt to it. Which way round does the eccentric fit please? Cheers, Martin |

During Sailing regattas in the BVI the main projectiles were water filled balloons (vegetable dye was BANNED!). Normally thrown by hand, these took on a whole new dimension when fired by surgical tubing catapults held between the shrouds with a bra cup as the projectile holder. Not only was the range vastly increased but the splatter effect on impact was massive. Could hurt a bit if you stopped one at close range full in the kisser.... All good fun. Martin |

Hi Adrian, Be aware that there is good value just in the items on the wall behind the lathe in the first picture: Chucks on MT arbors, nice boring head etc etc. All will be very easy to sell. As other have said the smaller items often do as well in aggregate as the main machines. Good luck with an unpleasant task. Regards, Martin |

Hi Jason, As you can see the original has slightly rounded edges (fillets?) on the casting. |

Hi All, Out of interest here is another often missing part that I have managed to 3D print and have now sold with its plane to several customers with good comments from the buyers. This one has no threads so is not stressed in use: |

Hi Jason, Your point is of course totally valid. I sell tools and collectables on EBay as I think is fairly well known on here. There are many tools that only sell well if complete with all parts so that they are at least useable. For the "collector" market the tools must be complete with totally original parts to do well, but "good user" tools have a following and it is this market that I am looking to address. In the past I have made partial sets of cutters for certain planes but it has been an uphill struggle for me and very labour intensive as they were from gauge plate and to quite a tight tolerance, also needing heat treating etc. There was no way that I could find of doing them in small quantities commercially so I did them myself but not really worth the effort. It did however allow me to clear a lot of otherwise non saleable items (as was), but valuable items that I had accumulated with other stock. With these particular fences I have already 3D printed some prototypes of the STRAIGHT SIDED fence which came out OK but the threaded area that takes a locking thumbscrew is far too weak to be of use. I tried reinforcing the underside with a brass threaded insert but still no good. Thus I need these in steel or brass, I am pretty sure that casting is WAY too expensive. As to an economic price per part, this is pretty unknown territory as I have no knowledge of the production costs for something like this. It is entirely possible that cost is why this has not been done before! I may not be doing myself any favours here but here are some pics of the actual original item as my F360 drawing is very much a first attempt. The underside and end cut outs are not needed. In use this is bolted to a long slot in the tool and used to keep the cutter a known distance from the edge of the work being stringed, this fence is for curved edges and one uses the other item for straight edges. Thanks to all for the interest in this. Regards, Martin

Hi, These are fences for a stringing hand router that are always absent. I have at least 15 of these tools needing fences. Each one comes with a straight and a curved fence for different work. This is hopefully a commercial project so not looking for any favours just a way of making them in smaller quantities than a larger company would not be interested in. I am not at all au fait with CNC but would like to dip into getting items made if possible and economically viable. There are several other projects for making rare and hard to find parts for tools that I have patterns. Jason, The hole is threaded 9/32" Whitworth and the slot does not need a fine finish, it is as cast in the original. DC31k, The slot could probably be done with a a 1/4" ball end cutter and have parallel sides. The drawing shown is as close to the original as I could get for an example only. Cheers, Martin It is purely for clearance of the string cutter at minimum settings from an edge. |

Hi Martin C, The original is cast iron with hollowed out sections on the underside but I have simplified the design somewhat to make it easier to fabricate. The hole in it will be tapped for 9/32W. There is also a similar part which has straight not curved sides which I would also need the same numbers of.. Cheers, Martin |

Hi All, I am looking at trying to generate a small run of this small item in steel or brass. Initially about 20 off maybe 50 later on. Here is a F360 of the item which is approx 35mm by 21mm and 14mm tall. I wonder what the feasability of this is in terms of cost and ease of fabrication. Can anyone help me with this please? Regards, Martin |

Thread: Australian Crayfish? |
09/04/2020 08:03:08 |
Thanks guys for all that extra info. In the Caribbean there are only the spiny lobster species and also occasionally we would get "slipper" lobsters while diving; about 6" long for a very big one but very tasty! Here in UK the native freshwater crayfish is being destroyed by the larger invasive species which carry a disease fatal to the UK ones. I briefly had a licence to catch them but was totally unsuccessful in catching any in a river that was "reputed" to be full of them. There are (were?) vast numbers caught in the central Serpentine Lake in Hyde Park, London. Cheers, Martin |

Thanks guys for that info. Much the same as Longoustine. Virtually all longoustine that are caught go yo European markets at very high prices. Most are landed at Peterhead. £40 a kilo wholesale is without doubt the highest price I have ever seen for lobster/ Crayfish! Assuming 2:1 for the Aus dollar Martin |

Hi All, Just channel surfing last night and caught a documentary episode about "Lobster" fishing in Australia. Actually crayfish but very big all the same. Seems there are several species of different value to the fish merchants. Can anyone from Australia please tell me if the prices mentioned are correct: 80-100 Australian dollars per kilo! That is wholesale so what do they make in the fish shops? Also what is the season? Very short i guess?... I used to have a small shellfish business buying and selling hand dived scallops here in Dorset and often bought lobster (with claws!), and while valuable they were nothing like those prices. Cheers, Martin |

Hi All This beggars belief! A woman walked into our small village post office/shop yesterday; (2 at a time only), wandered about and got her shopping and then told the lovely lady who runs it with her 3 staff that she has "popped out" as her partner is showing bad symptoms of having the virus! Bad cough and raised temperature. She had no gloves or mask on. You cannot believe the drama that this idiocy has cause in our little community. As of late today the shop is not allowing customers inside at all and will take shopping lists to be picked by the staff and collected from a side entrance latter on. The Broadmayne FaceBook page is inundated with comments and everyone is REALLY worried now. Cheers and stay safe! Martin |
