Thread: Myford Taper Turning Attachment on Power Crossfeed Lathe
26/01/2015 02:23:52

The gear that the cross slide drive uses has the key built into it and the way is in the screw.

I usually disengage the gear box and pull out the cross slide drive selector knob then by turning the carriage drive wheel you can spin that keyed gear while you are at the same time trying to screw the cross slide back in.

It does take some finesse but soon you will find they mesh up and then push the drive selector back in and thread the slide back together.

Thread: Myford Idler shaft bushing problem
02/01/2015 00:33:08

Well that was dumb of me. That was just a collar. It actually has that collar a hardened steel washer and the a ball bearing thrust washer and then the bushing is back in behind there.

I just took it all apart for nothing.

It sure looked like a problem but it evidently is nothing except myself not knowing how is was designed.

I just want to be positive that it doesn't run like that because I can't imagine that little circlip running against a stationary bushing. That would be taking all the force of the clutch being disengaged and seems it would burn up the side of that retainer clip pretty fast.

That is the part that has me wondering what is up with it.

It is a bummer that I held it like I did because the shaft was free in the bushing and I could have disassembled it easily.

Now it is locked solid like one piece and you can't turn the shaft in the bushing at all.

It was free and I gave it a good dose of oil then held it and in 30 seconds it locked solid on the shaft.

Not sure how I will get it apart now. Heating it maybe but don't want to ruin the finish doing that.

Just have to get it apart now I guess. I can raised the metal with a punch in the bore or the bushing O.D. and red locktite it in.

Going to be tough to get the shaft out of it now.

Posted a video instead.

That is the bushing that is spinning in the cast housing. It was free on the shaft but I held it for a while with large vise grips and now you can't hold it as it almost immediately seized on the shaft.

Trying to post picture of the bushing.

It is the only photo in my album.

Can't seem to get it here in the thread though.

Here is the bushing I am referring to. The whole piece is spinning in the casting.

The shaft was free in it but since I stopped the bushing from spinning in the casting by holding it manually now the shaft has tightened up in it and I have to let the whole thing spin.

Is it suppose to spin in the casting ?

I have a Myford Super 7 and the clutch side bushing of the idler shaft is spinning in the casting.

This doesn't seem correct the shaft should be spinning in the bushing instead of the bushing in the casting, correct?

I do not see what would hold the bushing from spinning in the casting.

The shaft was free in the bushing but since it was spinning in the casting that didn't seem right and with no way in sight to stop it I put a large pair of vice grips on the bushing and stopped it from spinning. Then I put the pulleys in high and let it spin with the shaft spinning in the bushing instead of it in the housing and in 30 seconds the shaft seized up tight in the bushing.

My question is,

Is this bushing supposed to spin and run in the casting.

It hasn't got any play in it and I suppose it has been like this as long as I have owned it I just never noticed it spinning.

Any help from someone that knows these lathes would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Daniel

Thread: Myford Super 7 fiber tumbler gears
26/01/2014 06:31:24

You are not kidding. Lol.

I still don't really know what locked it up.

Was threading and carriage was engaged but not bound up in any way.

I disengaged the clutch and reversed the travel and when I dropped the clutch back in. BAM!!! Opened the door and saw it tore 1/4 of the teeth off both tumbler gears.

I was pushing the pins out, from the backside. What I pushed in was the plug capping off the hole they drilled in center of gear post. There is a 3/16" plug in the center. It went in 1/8" but not past the cross drilled hole so it can still get oil from the fitting. The oiler fittings are on the front side face of the gears. I didn't punch those in.

Appears it will be fine. Had I pushed the center plug any further it would have blocked the cross drilled hole feeding the gears bore.

Thanks for every ones help. I do appreciate it greatly.

I will remember to only tighten the pin holding the assembly in to just take the free play out.

Kwil,

Thank you sir. Lol NO banging !!

Used the vice and pressed them boogers right out.

At first I wasn't sure if just the center pushed out or the whole peg. I used a small 3/16 tool first and the center pushed in but the peg nor the outer head on the peg wasn't moving.

I then tried the whole piece and it pushed it right out.

My only question now is why do they have a pin in the peg. I actually pushed one of those center pins in about 1/8". Will that center piece being pushed in make any difference.

I think I see now that it is capping off the pocket for the grease. The grease hole is still clear in side of shaft so I didn't push it in beyond that hole so hoping it will be fine.

Thanks again,

Daniel

Ray,

Thank you.

I appreciate it. I had been searching all evening and was beginning to think they were totally obsolete.

I was searching Myford part and Myford gears and plenty of other gears but not the Tufnol fuse tumblers gears.

Then I finally by chance searched Myford Tumbler Gears and I have a used set coming.

There were even new ones still in the package but the seller says he doesn't ship to the U.S.

Still not positive how you get them off the arm. It appears the posts they are on must just press in.

It looks like a shaft in a sleeve kinda from the backside. Don't want to mess it up banging them out if there is a proper way.

Anyone know the best way to swap the tumbler gears on their shafts?

Thanks again,

Daniel

Would anyone know where I could find a pair of the two fiber tumbler gears for a Myford Super 7 ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Daniel
