Welcome to the forum from a fellow Beaver owner, a few others on here too.

True story, i got offered a free lathe last week. ‘If you can move it, it’s yours’ was the pitch.

I passed, as had several people before me apparently.

Moral of the story, other than export or scrap, majority of old large machines are not worth a carrot.

Cost more to haul than they are worth.

Industrial manual mills come in many flavours, it could be totally unsuitable for the type of work you intend to do on it.

You need to get more details before making a decision.

Not convinced it is an unsafe product, just because the terminal cover can be removed without using a screwdriver, does not make it a death trap, it just doesnt meet this countries regulations.

Think about it, you can take a bulb out in your house and expose live terminals if the switch is on, and most ceiling roses can be unscrewd by hand to expose permanently live terminals.

The world is full of bad advice, doesn’t mean you have to follow it.

Why do these threads always descend into Health and Safety lectures.

I think the majority of people who have homeworkshops employ a decent amount of common sense, practical ability and a healthy respect for things that try to kill you.

Pretty sure by todays commercial standards many of our workshops, mine included would probably be deemed highly unsafe and fall short of many ‘Regulations’

But strangely enough in 40 years of using it, iv’e managed to retain all my digits, still have both eyes and despite wiring everything up myself, including all manner of 3 phase workarounds over the years, never had so much as a tickle from the electrickery.

Ah ok, interested as i had this recently with an older motor with the star point dug out.

Inverter Worked fine up to 50 hz but tripped on current overload at 65hz.

Tried same inverter with same parameter settings on a newer star/delta motor and it didnt trip.

Hopefully someone on here will throw some light on the problem

Is it a star delta motor or a star motor with the star point dug out ?

Looks like a pretty good haul for £170.

Arc sell MT shellmill arbors (To mount the big cutters on) You need to measure the hole in the cutters to determine what size you want.

They only list 16mm and 22mm in 2MT

Would want at least half a dozen full size ones for that money

Sounds like the bloke making the offer is a decent sort, seems he could have easily lowballed you.

Maybe return the favour and let it go complete for what might be a bit less than ultimate value.

However if you want maximum return, break it.

Second best route for profit is ebay, but be prepared for some pain.

Reckon until you've had a few, you won't really know what you want.

Nothing against Chinese machinery, (Although the quality of the few iv'e had has been questionable) but resale value is generally low, so if you do find it's not what you want, be prepared to lose money. You can buy a lot of quality used iron for nearly £3K

Find a decent english, (or indeed German, Swiss or many others) machine and you will not lose if you decide to swap it.

Personally not a fan of round column mills, couldn't live without a quill feed, wouldn't want a MT head, find changing belts a PITA and don't have the time or patience to only take light cuts.

Iv'e found all that out from owning a succession of Mill's with some or all those features

If you have the room grab that Beaver, you only move them once and it will do everything you want with ease, call it ‘Future Proofing’

Surprising how quickly you run out of room if doing bike bits etc, and having to take light cuts is seriously tedious.

Another thing to consider is 40 int tooling is cheap and readily available.
