I've seen a few Bang good hit and miss engines, the blue ones, from acquaintances. They ran really well for about 10 or 12 runs, then will not run.

On the ones I have seen the aluminum bores, not lined with steel and not chromed, wear out completely. I fitted a steel liner in one but it was prone to overheat afterward, and there was very little clearance around the head screws to fit it.

No idea whether they have changed the design along the way to add a steel or iron liner, but the early ones I saw were not designed with longevity in mind. Still makes a nice shelf model, running or not.

If they were any good they would likely not be for sale from that supplier. I reckon they only sell lines that are bought in cheap because the items are not first quality or are ‘surplus to requirements’ from manufacturing runs.

That's a totally incorrect statement.

Why not just swap the tips? The ones in the link look an awful lot like gtn3 tips. These are readily available and if you are prepared to wait they can be had for as little as 60p a tip from China.

Worth a shot to buy and see, though I'm thinking that the Iscar would be a proprietary pattern.

After reading the problems that people have with parting off, I'm thinking of just staying with the Iscar holder and tips. Even though they are expensive, I've never had the slightest problem parting anything with the Sieg C6 lathe and the Iscar holder and tips, honestly its like using a hot knife through butter.

Thanks Ketan & Jason for your replies.

For the last 7 years I've been using Iscar GFN 3J IC354 inserts in an Iscar holder -

Iscar GFN 3J IC354

Everything is great about them, except for the price (even though they do last for a long time, to buy a whole pack of 10 is $$$). They are around $18+ an insert and I was wanting to move away to something cheaper like the NCIH Part Off Blade.

Many thanks again for the replies, I will do some searching for those MEM articles.

Kind regards,

Jim

Thread: What lathes have you had?
23/07/2019 01:38:40

I've had a Sieg 9x20 and now a Sieg C6 10x22

This is just one factory and a couple of models, the factories producing all the makes and models in China can hardly keep up with production.

if it wasn't for these machines a lot of people wouldn't be enjoying using a lathe.

well, at least they have people with facial hair and jaundice covered.

We're up to LGBTQQIAAP now, so expect to see a few more 'variants' of these 21st century emoji couples. devil

What about tattooed people? They must be feeling rightly discriminated against. I can't go anywhere and not see people proudly wearing ink. Sometimes if I have been a bit messy with the Dykem I feel a bit of the 'in' crowd.

Will do Paul, I have it now. It dried really fast and doesn't feel at all greasy. I'll put it on tomorrow before working in my shed.

Looked up "Gloves in a Bottle" can't see a seller for them in Oz. It looks like great stuff from what I read.
