Thanks to all who replied but I have sorted the problem to gain access to the transformer I had to move the lathe forward from the wall I moved it a small amount and with limited access I found 2 fuses but these were ok after a bit more movement and better access I found 2 more fuses ,these were on the 2 wires that go up to the lamp and one of these was blown these are 20mmx5 glass fuses fortunately I had a fuse so after replacing it the lamp worked but it was a bit of a hassle to get the lathe levered back into position but I really couldn’t manage without a machine light

The lo voltage light on my Harrison M300 stopped working I thought it was just a bulb but a new bulb didn’t solve the issue The seems to be no power at the pins in the bulb holder ,does anybody know if there is a fuse in the transformer for the light

Thanks to all those who replied and explained what to do ,I have a plate with 40 holes so I now know that I can move to the 36 hole and go from there and hopefully will remember what to do for any future holes required so thanks to all The forum is such a great source of knowledge

I have a rotary table with a 90 To 1 reduction and also 4 division plates which cover a wide range of holes can any body tell how to work out the number of holes to use so that I can divide this into 100 so that I can scribe that l can scribe the lines I know that I need to turn 3.6 degrees so less than a full turn of the handle

Thanks for your photos and your dwg they are very helpful ,the thing that confuses me is that the 6ba screws clamp the graduated ring to the hand wheel I thought the ring would free enough to be rotated to zero,similar to the way the scale on the elevating wheel can be set to zero .Also can you tell what the washer is made from is it metal or fibre I hope you are able to sort out the problem on your m/c you have bigger problems than me so thanks again

I have a J&S 540 grinder it is a metric version ,the graduated scale on the cross feed hand wheel is missing ,I have been thinking about trying to make a new one ,but I am not sure how it is graduated or how it is numbered also what the exact shape is does anybody have a similar grinder and and give me any information or even where I could find the missing scale

I recently bought a grinding jig for sharpening dies for a 3/4 Coventry die head ,but I have no instructions for how to use it correctly .Hopefully somebody will have used this jig and offer advice on how to use it PS I do have a Jones &Shipman surface grinder

I have a Coventry die head and it is missing one of the machine screws which hold on the front cover plate ,the screw measures .172 o/d and is 40 tpi ,I have tried all the thread charts and cannot find what the thread is , was this a special thread used by the manufacturer.
Hopefully somebody has come across the thread ,but I will probably end up having to make one

I would not be in favour of bolting the skyhook onto the tool post a couple of years ago being of an age when lifting heavy weights was becoming a problem I decided to sole the problem I bought some heavy duty door tracking and fastened two lengths each about 15foot long to the underside of the roof trusses each truss is at about 2foot centres I then suspended another length of door tracking from the and on this piece of tracking I have an electric hoist The power cable to the hoist has steel rings tied to it and these slide on a a length of plastic covered steel wire .With this ssystem the hoist can be pulled up and down and across the workshop ,I can use it lift the rotary table on to the milling machine also the 10 inch chuck on to the DSG I can still manage to lift the chucks on to the Harrison 300 .I still repair some large rotors for a friend and without the hoist I could not get them into the DSG ,as you get older you have to get solutions for these problems

I have just finished tapping 75 m4 blind holes in 12 mm square 316 stainless steel , this was a job for a local wholesale butcher who was unable to get these spare parts because off the present lock down .It was a nerve wrecking business as I had no spare material and there would be no chance of removing the broken tap .I drilled the holes 3.4 mm this is .1 over the recommend size but it certainly worked for I also used a spiral flute tap which is recommend for stainless ,but I think after 75 holes it is getting slightly harder to tap

Thanks to all those who posted a reply ,I can only say there is such a lot of confusion about suitable drill grinding machines .The man who found the Dormer 108 for the ridiculous price is a lucky man .The motor has burnt out on the Darex which I have at present and I only had inconsistent results ,good for getting the lips both equal but the clearance often had to be altered freehand .I have sent an enquiry to Kanidal about there machine ,but it may be to expensive so thanks to all

I need to purchase a new drill grinding machine I would mainly grind grind drills from 5mm to 20 mm dia anything bigger I just grind by hand and anything smaller I just touch up by hand .I have previously used a Darex drill grinding machine with limited success ,but I did find it useful to get the drill lips the same length even I did have to alter clearances by and I wonder if the new Darex is an improvement on my old model,

Is there anybody in the forum who has knowledge about 12v LED lights I recently purchased lights from eBay only to find that the taillight did not work ,it did work when connected to the wire for the brake lights hence the bulbs are ok it just doesn't work in the dimmer taillight mode all the other functions i.e.indicators,reverse lights work ok I have checked the wire which connects to the circuit board and it seems ok ,as a mechanical engineer my knowledge of electronics is limited any help would be appreciated ,I hate to discard an item which may be easily repaired

I have an eclipse magnetic table mounted on my Jones&Shipman surface grinder ,unfortunately It leaks oil at the on/off handle ,has anybody experienced the same problem ,there must be a seal on the shaft to prevent the leakage .If anybody has dismantled the table or can tell me where to obtain a new seal or is it a standard type oil seal any advice would be appreciated

I run several machines all fitted with low voltage lamps either 50 or 24 volt bc bulbs ,It is now very difficult or impossible to obtain these bulbs does anybody know where to purchase bulbs or what solutions have other people come up with

the rotary dial for changing the screwi cutting which is numbered 1to 8 on the gearbox of my Harrison m300 had become very stiff in fact almost to change the settings ,so I decided to remove the gearbox to investigate .,when removed I discovered that the shaft on which the gears slide had become all glazed with a brown looking glaze after washing the shaft with some thinners to remove this glaze the gears moved with ease . I also replaced the sight glass for the oil level .After the gearbox was refitted to the lathe I refilled with the correct oil The handbook said that the gearbox required 1/2 litre of oil but I found that I needed 3/4 litre to bring oil to the correct level on the sightglass

My name is David Gregg I live in Northern Ireland I have been involved in engineering for over 50 years I served an apprenticeship as a turner with GEC steam turbines I have worked on some very large machines after leaving GEC l worked as an instructor and then the workshop manager in an agricultural college In my home workshop I now run a DSG and a Harrison m300 lathe as well as an Ajax mill ,an Arboga mill/drill also a Jones &.Shipman 540!. I still do odd jobs for local farmers ,parts for people restoring old vehicles/machinery . My main interest is old vehicles and working on larger projects
