Thread: Chinese tacho - beware
21/06/2019 15:59:33

Just to keep the thread vaguely on track, I have cheap tacho units on my lathe and mill, they take a second or two to settle, they could certainly be more responsive.

They have not been slow enough to motivate me into picking up the Sharpie and marking out 250rpm intervals around the knob, which would be sufficient I would think?

Sure I have heard of Huawei, it was Xiaomi, Haier and Hisense that I had not heard of.

All available in your local branch of Currys, under their own brand name.

Xiaomi is now the biggest smartphone brand in India, and 4th biggest worldwide, Oppo another Chinese brand you probably don't know is 5th biggest worldwide. You might not have noticed but plenty of people have.

You are a wise and learned man, can you name me 5 Chinese brand names in mainstream retail? No meaning or agenda in the question.

Interesting question...

Lenovo and Huawei for a start.

Neil

Add Pirelli to that list. Xiaomi are not yet that big in western retail, it won't be long before they are though. Haier sell some own brand stuff, but also own brands including sanyo and candy. Hisense were one of the main world cup sponsors and sell TVs worldwide.

I am confused! ... not an unusual conditionsad

I remember Chernobyl but NOT any radiation fears in the UK . Given the normal geostrophic wind patterns of generally West to East I wouldn't have expected any major pollution.

Just shows how little attention is paid to your average hill farmer I suppose. Not that long since the last restrictions were lifted:

Thread: The Chocolate Fireguard as designed by Mercedes Benz
26/04/2019 10:04:26

It's a driving aid, if you think it doesn't help you, turn it off or ignore it.

These systems are clearly being put in to test viability in the real world, and for now will err strongly on the side of caution where they can, so of course it isn't going to keep telling you something when it has had no recent inputs thinking

Thread: Pendent control box for a VFD
12/04/2019 13:53:42

I used chint actuators and contactors on my vfd install, though for some reason they are currently astronomically priced on eBay, other suppliers on Google look more normal.

About 4gbp per button or so, they have a nice heft to them, and I liked how I could have a guard ring on the start button, but not on the stop control, small details like that adds a nice polish I think.

Thread: What makes your bristle?
08/04/2019 07:25:11

Bill, assuming this is consistent between brush head changes, then it will be temperature and humidity difference. On one brush the residual paste is drying out on the head and shank, to be washed off at next use, on the other it is running all the way down and collecting in the gap before it dries out.

The unpleasant smell bothers me, and I have clearly spent too much time thinking about it 😁

I really do hope people will stop suggesting that HSE or the EU be contacted, that is likely to get people like Politicians etc who do not understand us investigating home workshops and hobbyists. Nothing good is likely to come from that!

V8Eng, what makes you think they aren't already here watching us?

Anyway, I imagine the statistics for injuries would plonk model engineering into DIY injuries:

There's a big long list of things to be banned before they find us😂

Robert, if your new all singing all dancing CNC clipboard jiggler brings down an overflying 737, then rest assured the lack of a suitable technical file will be the very least of your problems.

Robert, your last post hangs your very tedious clipboard on a different set of goalposts to your first one, as well as being wrong again; are you just deliberately trying to have an argument?

If you have a genuine concern, why have you not contacted the relevant enforcing authority and sought their opinion?

I'm not sure what you mean by the first paragraph, can we have plain languge please?

On the second, I would not want to be the person who put the compliance spotlight on the hobby. I have my own opinion on this, based on professional involvement since the regulations were introduced. Yes I'm being deliberately controversial, but to raise awareness not be argumentative

Sigh. Your two posts argue different points, hence you are more interested in argument than answers.

You say you won't ask the only people who could give you a definitive answer, so I conclude you don't really want one.

You say you have your own opinion on this, I don't think discussion here is going to change it.

The only point of your posting is therefore obviously to stir up sentiment re EU legislation, despite the protestations in your first post.

The question is - where do model engineers stnd regarding CE compliance and marking? For this Forum it's the Machenery Directive, Low Voltage Directive and EMC directive. With the notable exception of the EMC directive and radio amateurs, none of these differentiate between commercial production and one-off or personal projects.

Robert G8RPI
(I'm involved in regulatory compliance as part of my day job)

Try looking at the enactment into UK law of these directives, eg PUWER.

Your many questions are largely moot, CE marking is mainly about common safety standards for the purposes of free trade, not the regulation of hobbyists.

Loads of technical information, and lots of discussion !

CPF used to be the best (only?) place for flashaholics but if your interest is in making your own within reasonable constraints, then http://budgetlightforum.com is probably the most useful now.

Some of the blf designed Chinese made torches are fantastic value, but if you have an old d cell maglite lying around then a proper led conversion is a nice little project.

Thread: New Lathe Tooling
12/12/2018 14:42:05
Terry, welcome to the 280/290 club, I find it is a useful size for real world stuff, and the ability to knock up custom bearing drifts and pullers is a massive boon for maintenance work on full sussers with their myriad bearing types and sizes.

My 280 has even managed to recreate some busted hope ti hub flanges with the help of a rotary table.

The 280/290 has very little room on the topside to fit in larger toolposts and tools, I remade one of the rotating clamp parts between cross and top slide to fit a T1 sized Dickson qctp, and 16mm tooling. Otherwise I think 12mm may be the limit.

As for supplies of stock you are in luck, even for small bits postage becomes the overriding cost, so local is almost always cheaper. Jenkins steel, in Cramlington are an eBay steel seller, often selling off cuts from their engineering side, I have bought from them a few times now, and they seem a good bunch.
Thread: Aldi Charger - Confidence Dented

I have killed two, I am no electronics genius and the problems were more deep seated than an obvious dry joint, though one was repaired for a while due to the aforementioned switch failure, but something else went a few months later.

The 5A ctek I got to replace them is much better, doesn't balk at very flat batteries either.

IMO the clones cannot hack being used as permanently attached trickle chargers, otherwise the cost/utility is still hard to beat.
Thread: Teaching a 17 year old how to use a lathe
30/06/2018 09:03:40

Write up the really basic safety rules, and stick them on the wall behind the lathe.

Discuss what he might want to make, then guide him through it step by step. Making something he wants will help maintain interest and help with information retention as it helps relate processes to a real object.

Get him to research the processes himself on youtube, you want to teach him enough so he can teach himself, there's no point in having you do all the work in the learning process.

Thread: Aerospece grade aluminium tubing
10/06/2018 23:17:55

Posted by Jolyon de Fossard on 10/06/2018 20:40:58:

The property I'm looking for is a good stiffness/resistance to bending to mass ratio.

There is no significant difference in youngs modulus between the various aluminium grades, so any old tat will do.

If it isn't stiff enough, change material, or change the dimensions, a diameter increase being the most effective.

I have done another test using the machines Z axis as a ref

No you haven't, you aren't measuring anything meaningful there, there is more than 1 axis of freedom.

You said you had trammed the head, but video 2 above clearly shows it is miles out. Step away from the spanners before you make it worse, go and have a cuppa, then engage the brain.

17/04/2018 13:18:19
STK2008, no-one here can tell you when your machines will arrive. Funnily enough, I think warco might have some idea, maybe you should give them a ring and ask?

In the meantime, look up Stefan Gotteswinter on YouTube, he has a 250 type lathe and has a video about improvements he made, and discusses the abilities and shortcomings of Chinese machine tools, as well as making lots of interesting stuff in his other videos.

As for 0.001" layers, I've recently got some 0.2mm nozzles and look forward to trying some really small objects!

I found that the 0.2mm nozzles were really good for lithophane printing. Basic guide here: **LINK**

Print them vertically up from the long edge however, doing it flat as per the video leaves them rather rough looking.
