Thread: Increasing cost of entry into model engineering
26/07/2018 23:28:03
I have a small hobby shop with a lathe and mill, well actually two lathes and two mills and some tig welding gear, but still small really. In there I indulge my favourite pastime of making bedding for my stainless steel hamster.

I want decent quality tooling that serves me well but doesn't hurt my pocket.

The individuals on you tube who have machining channels and review kit from the likes of bang good are a God send to the likes of me. They don't receive payment - unless you count getting to keep the tools they review - and they give the stuff a good work out so any flaws become apparent.

I just bought a set of 16mm toolholders and some inserts from bang good off the back of a recent review. They are excellent. They are no different in quality to the ones I'd purchase from all the usual UK suppliers except in one very important regard. They are a fraction of the cost. And by a fraction,I mean about a third.

I also needed an ISO 30 chuck recently. I bought one from bang good. It is excellent. Negligible run out, well made and finished. Does me proud. It was considerably less expensive, by an order of magnitude, than the same or basically identical product from the usual UK sources.

So essentially if you want your hobby machine shop to not break the bank then you have to shop carefully and you'll get quality items from the likes of bang good. You are buying exactly the same products from exactly the same factories that the UK suppliers do. They then stick their large mark up on it.

Perhaps you need to consider a bigger machine with more capacity.
Thread: A delta motor running in star config.

Just get and fit a smaller motor. Right tool for the job and all that.
Thread: Pressure as a unit of time
29/04/2018 19:03:36
Re the idea that people have been converting pressure gauges to other things for decades...people have been committing murder for millenia, it doesn't make it any less wrong!

I'd not make a clock to gauge conversion using pounds per square light second. That would be mixing units.

I've had enough now, I'm off to the bar...
Thread: Harrison mill levelling bolts

Nice one Trevor. You've helped me out with that answer too. Be a while before I need to worry about levelling mine though.
28/04/2018 19:11:12
Not wanting to be a pedant but...watch out for those thread angles. Whit is 55 degrees and Unc is 60 degrees.
28/04/2018 18:25:42
Hello,

I have a Harrison horizontal/vertical Mill which I've just bought and am setting about restoring. There is nothing Whitworth or BSF on it. It's all Unc and Unf. I believe the levelling bolts are Unc.

I'm afraid I can't give much more than that as I'm not in s position to access it currently.

Not you as well. It's bad enough with Doubleboost doing it.

I'm going to get an old clock and make it into a pressure gauge.

5 grand for what is essentially a motorised treadle lathe. Astonishing.

I have just bought the same machine. Mine is convertible to horizontal milling. You can read about it on the mig welding forum. See my posts entitled eBay-tastic.
Thread: Fuelling a Boiler using Electricity
20/03/2018 12:04:38
The thing is. Generally the steam is used to drive a turbine to produce the electricity. Not the other way around. There's a good reason for that.
20/03/2018 10:17:51
My earlier post refers.
20/03/2018 09:42:51
I saw a video of one of those in a chemical works in the 70s, think it was Runcorn. The tank was filled with steam from an external source.

20/03/2018 09:27:21
Alternatively one could use the electricity to drive an electric motor which would be coupled to the wheels through suitable gearing.

I don't mean to be sarcastic. Just playing devil's advocate!
19/03/2018 15:04:59
I think in the current climate that I'd better not.

There was a story from the US many years ago about a young man who distilled some isotope or other from gallons of glow in the dark paint.

The story was called the Radioactive Boy Scout or similar. He understandably caught the attention of the authorities.

Reminds me of a conversation I had with my brother about power plants for model boats.

The conclusion we inevitably came to led to us researching (for purely academic purposes, you'll be glad to hear) just how small you could build a working nuclear reactor.
Thread: Can Someone move a mill for me please?
24/02/2018 18:20:47
Thanks for all the info and reviews. I've got the seller palletising the mill for me, very kindly I might add.

Just waiting on a quote now.

Carl.

You trying to be funny?!
24/02/2018 14:05:46

Hello Chaps,

Thank you both for your help. I was really hoping that the LandyLift chap's email and details were going to crop up. I knew that he had delivered John "Doubleboost" Mill's Harrison 140 when he got it, but I couldn't remember the name or number.

I'll be getting in touch with him. I'm going to be putting a VFD on this mill for the main motor and the 1/8th horse power feed. Also generally giving it a good go over, so it should be interesting. I've been putting a VFD on my Harrison lathe and a DRO too. I've been posting over on the Mig Welding website about that stuff.

Thanks again, I will let you know how it all goes.

Carl.

Hello,

I've just bought a Harrison Vertical milling machine. The slight snag is that it is located in Derby, whilst I am in Morayshire. The machine is about 750kg I believe.

I was wondering if anyone might like to quote me a price for uplifting the machine and delivering it to my address. My post code is IV36.

You can either reply to me here or PM as you wish.

Many thanks,

Carl.
