Thread: What bearings for a submersible wheelchair?
06/10/2018 17:58:50
316 stainless on ptfe is how it is done. 316 stainless is required due to the high concentrations of chlorides in seawater, and in a pool too.

05/10/2018 19:44:18
You don't need the complication of ball races etc for a submersible application.

316 stainless steel running in ptfe bush. I have extensive experience of this running in seawater. Lasts forever.
Thread: Rocol RTD shelf life

Regarding the query of the original poster. In industry, oils, chemicals and solvents often have a test date. This is to ensure that no deterioration has occurred in storage and that the product is fit for use. Certainly this was done in the aircraft industry.

That might be an explanation for the date on the Rocol.

Thread: Cost of mini lathes
09/09/2018 18:54:34
Agreed Re the capacity of these machines to open up the world of hobby engineering. As a teen I was besotted with engineering and lathes. I'd have killed for one of those mini lathes back in the 80s.

Joking aside, it just depends what you want to do. They can be of very variable quality. A friend of mine bought one and it was junk. Then my uncle bought one fir Model Railway use and it was OK.
09/09/2018 15:25:05
They cost a lot. Because you will soon realise it's limitations and need to buy a proper one.
Thread: Couple of things at Lidl

V8eng my local Lidl still has inverter welders. If you want I can get one and post it to you. Reimburse me for the cost and the postage.

Thread: Aluminium thread strength

As others have said, on 8mm thick material a nut and bolt is the answer.
Thread: Myford Super 7 metric change gears
15/08/2018 08:38:01
Just for interest my friend Richard Oakley can 3D print any gear you may require.

This is done using a FormLabs SLA machine. The print medium is a high impact resin similar to Paxolin.
Thread: Aluminium thread strength

It's nice to see a reference to MIL HDBK 5J. I thought it was just me that used it.

The case of the bolt threaded directly into aluminium is really dependent on what you want to do with it.

If you are building air or spacecraft or a nuclear reactor, then use an insert. If it is for a jobbing task in the workshop or home then threads into the aluminium will be fine.

I've seen threads directly into 6082 T6 take loads measured in tonnes.

Thread: Which books
10/08/2018 16:43:10
LH Sparey's book is very good. Most of what he talks about in the book is done on Drummonds, so seems like a good book for the smaller lathe.

Lathework, a Complete Course, by Harold Hall is also very good. It's a Workshop Practice series title. I too have Chapman, from over 30 years ago in training and still excellent.

I'm going to suggest something else that is not a book. Machining is inherently practical. Watch some of the you tube machining channels.

In my opinion the best one is a guy called Doubleboost. He is British and he is very down to earth and does some interesting projects. His channel is Sunday Night Night Cap. Puts out a new video every Sunday. The old ones are all archived. Highly recommend - equal worth to reading several books.
Thread: Cheap LED rpm modules
04/08/2018 18:47:59
Quick search on led tachometer threw up four from bang good all under a tenner.
04/08/2018 18:46:17
Yes Led and tachometer. Got mine from Amazon. I just put one on my Harrison M250 during a vfd conversion. It works a treat. You can read all about it over on the mig welding forum, under "A Vfd for my lathe" https://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/threads/a-vfd-for-my-lathe.77865/page-10#post-1192231

Thread: Mercer British

Hi Martin,

My brother got a new to him Emco lathe and it had a dial travel indicator on it that needed a service.

He enquired of Doubleboost Re Bob and he did the job for him. To say thanks my brother sent some bits, a few drills, de burning tool, circlip pliers I think, which the Boost used in one of his Sunday give aways.
01/08/2018 20:33:21
Doubleboost who posts on you tube has a friend called Bob who refurbishes and repairs dti's and the like.

You could try asking Doubleboost to see if his friend would have a spare part. He is usually very obliging.

Doubleboost is generally found on the mig welding forum, as am I.
Thread: Increasing cost of entry into model engineering
27/07/2018 15:51:06
I don't mind you tube reviewers making a bit of commission on stuff that gets sold. They've shown me what I can and can't buy with some degree of confidence, so fair play to them. Neil, I remember last year you reviewed a lathe in the magazine from Arc. I take it you got to keep that machine? So all's fair then

Just to be clear, I've nothing against any UK supplier. I still use them. You'd want your head examining, I suspect, if you bought a sight unseen rotary table or similar from bang good. That said, for things like inserts, it's great. Especially if I can watch someone demonstrate them working well.

I found out about bang good from a slightly different angle. An electronics enthusiast friend showed me it as a place to buy small electronic modules, the type of stuff you'd use with Arduino. Much cheaper, again, than UK based suppliers.

I used a little relay module from there in my current VFD conversion on my Harrison M250. You can read all about this over on the mig welding forum. It's in a thread called "A vfd for my lathe".

Hey. If Arc can plug his stuff here, I can plug mine.

Point taken about the bad reviews and so forth. However, if I watch someone who is taking a heavy cut on a piece of stainless round bar and the insert is performing well, then I can choose to buy that tool. If he does something else with another tool and it doesn't perform, then I don't buy it. That is the risk taken out of it for me.

If the tools don't perform then they fail the review. There is very little you can do to fake that. OK so you tubers get a small income from making and editing videos. I get a great deal of pleasure from watching them and I get a lead to a good supply of tools. I don't begrudge them the income, wish I could do the same. Pay for bits for your shop by making a few videos, be great.

27/07/2018 10:19:36
I wouldn't buy a mill from bang good. But then I wouldn't buy one from Arc either.

In my original post the point I was trying to make was that you tube reviewers are helping the likes of me-and dare I say it us-to save considerable sums on the bits and pieces we need. My recent tooling acquisition is a case in point. I bought the ones I saw reviewed, so I knew they were good and fit for purpose. I saved by an order of magnitude on my old suppliers price. And the quality and function was exactly the same.

How do the UK suppliers gauge the products they are buying from the same Chinese factories?
