Thread: Can summer car tyres be used in winter? |
18/06/2020 07:22:15 |
Once you get the car moving and the tyres warm up the what's the difference? Touch your tyres after a trip, they get quite warm. Only difference that I can see is deeper lugs on the treads to handle snow (it actually does snow here in Australia) so when I visit alpine places it is mandatory to fit "Snow Chains" if I wish to go fishing at Rocky Valley dam. Rocky Valley More important IMHO is to change the engine oil to a winter grade to handle low temps (check your service manual). * Danny M * |

Not a popular topic but the dreaded pox is still here so here is some news from the Pacific. Kiwis are doing well and we had a footy game in Oz. **LINK** Best wishes to all the forum members so please stay safe and well. * Danny M * |
Thread: Drill sharpening? |
12/06/2020 02:38:28 |
One of the best attachments that I made for my Picador clone was a Harold Hall inspired attachment to ensure exactly 180° rotatation of the drill bit being sharpened. Details are contained in this excellent book which should be considered as a useful reference for model engineers. Tool and Cutter Sharpening No affiliation, just a satisfied customer/reader. * Danny M * |
Thread: Compressor inspection |
09/06/2020 09:31:33 |
I asked this question many years ago but don't recall getting a satisfactory explanation. Why is the compressor drain valve located about 10° off from the bottom? I have to tilt my el cheapo compressor to get the last sputters of water out from the valve. Obviously there is a good manufacturing/scientific reason for this but it escapes my logic ;-} * Danny M * |
Thread: How to glue plastics |
08/06/2020 10:18:17 |
I have had quite a bit of success with this when I built a model box from Corflute plastic (same stuff that is used by pollies and real estate agents for signs) Plastic Adhesive It actually worked better than my dubious expectations and it even managed to bond the Corflute plastic to aluminium channel. I did a few tests for peel and shear and was quite impressed that something actually performed as advertised. The instructions on the package were followed scrupulously btw. I am in Australia but surely you have an equivalent in the U.K.? * Danny M * |
Thread: Tailstock die holder |
08/06/2020 03:04:35 |
Here is a sliding die holder that I made. The body slides on a steel rod that is held in the tailstock drill chuck. It was easier than turning a M2 taper and permits it to be used in my mill. I added the (weak) spring to help it along but not sure that it really needed it. * Danny M * |

Thread: Coronavirus |
02/06/2020 05:20:24 |
I have refrained from commenting about this pandemic for a while as I am fortunate? to be living in Australia but as I have friends and family living in the U.K. and the U.S.A this is getting a bit to close to the heart. What prompted this post was a TV program that I viewed recently that reviewed the history of the Spanish Flu epidemic of just over 100 years ago in Australia and the lessons that can be learned from tha t outbreak. There are many similarities in the mechanism of the spread of Covid-19, in the case of Australia it was maritime and apparently a shipload of troops that were recalled en route to Europe when WW1 ended was instrumental. On return to Australia, the ship berthed to refuel in New Zealand and although only officers and medical staff were allowed to disembark, that was enough to permit at least one individual to return to the ship and spread the virus. Once the ship reached Australia (flying the yellow flag) the flu virus was not effectively contained and so slowly spread around the country Australia 1918 Now in 2020, Australia has (apparently) learned this lesson from history and a strict maritime lockdown has been implimented again, even using the same quarantine stations dating back to over 100 years ago. This did not however prevent the Ruby Princess **LINK** from slipping through the ropes, just like the troopship in 1918 100 years ago international air travel was not an issue but nowadays it is under the same lockdown and isolation measures as maritime restrictions. Only Australian air passengers returning to Australia from overseas are permitted to land and they are immediately isolated to selected locations. The scary part of the program was that (just like discovered in Sorth Korean nightclubs nowadays) one has to be very vigilant when relaxing restrictions as it only takes one person, the so called 'Super Spreader' **LINK** So lessons to be learned - Stay home, stay safe and be sensible and be careful all my fellow model engineering friends and your families. The pandemic has not ended, just the goalposts are being moved to get the economy of all countries moving a bit but we are all just as vulnerable as we were last week. Oh dear! Does this mean that my (Oz) newsagent won't recieve my monthly favourite magazine? I really prefer the 'hard copy' for my library and do not subsrcibe as I like to keep my local newsagent in business! Failing all that, is anybody who does not collect their magazines whom is prepared to send any missing issues to Australia for fair recompence? PM me please.. * Danny M *

Thread: Sort of a Straw Poll |

LOL. I am A SKIN Spending the Kids Inheritance Now As my children have done well for themselves I would not like to saddle them with disposing of my hobby equipment and getting ripped-off so I decided leave it to my model club who could value and sell off the gear for realistic prices. In return the club gets to keep 50% of the proceeds. Balance to my family (less costs for my wake). Club readily agreed, club treasurer has a naughty gleam in his eyes though. * Danny M *

Stripped, cleaned and lubed my fishing reels. Re-spooled a few with new Japanese J-Braid X8 as it has a good reputation locally J-Braid X8 Rigged up a clip for my drone so I can fly the tackle much further than my casting abilities. Yep - Yesterday the Vic. Govt. permitted fishing and after nearly 3 months of lockdown I can get some fresh air and excercise at last. During lockdown I have literally made hundreds of flies and lures so now I can see if any work as planned. * Danny M * |
Thread: Siemens does not like me...! |
14/05/2020 06:58:05 |
Thanks Raymond. I read the technical specs before attempting to download it and as my HP laptop only came with Win 10 I decided not to waste by time. But if as you say, it works, then I might have another try because it does appear to be quite a useful program (even if one does has to trade details with Siemens to join their mailing list). * Danny M *

It might be worthwhile checking your Win 10 version. System requirements state Win 10 Pro and note that Win 10 Home edition won't work. * Danny M * |

The feeling of catching a fish regardless of size on something you have created whether it be a fly , lure ,float , rod or reel is something only a Fisho knows ! Ian. Oh how so true. Here is my favourite little spinning rod. I built this over 20 years ago and as Boris said a decent rod is not cheap. G.Loomis IMX graphite blank, Fuji gold plated titanium/cermet guides, Fuji reel seat and grade A cork grips it cost me about $400 at the time but worth every penny in the satisfaction of using it over the years. I have made a few similar for special mates as birthday presents..Usually do the thread art in the colours of their footy team and add ther name in gold Letraset.. * Danny M * |
Thread: Where do you put your chuck key? |

The things you need close at hand when working in the lathe? Things like keys for the QC tool post and tool inserts and the toolholder needed for the job but not for the current operation? The obvious place for the chuck key on the Boxford is on top of the headstock with the spare tool holders on the back of the cabinet behind the bed but is that good practice (I always stop the lathe before reaching for anything but leaning over to get a different toolholder seems wrong somehow)? Circular magnet from a pre-loved floppy drive attached to the gear cover of my C3 mini-lathe, You can see it at the left end of the lathe in this photo * Danny M * |
