Thread: taper roller headstock adjustment
08/05/2020 17:26:13

This is a machine I bought secondhand. It was made in 1985 and was a high speed version. I converted it back to the normal speed range. I was doing some cutting today in hard steel [ bits out of a printer]. The finish was poor just holding it in the chuck but a turned a section with the end supported by a fixed centre and that improved the finish. Same tool so maybe its an adjustment problem. Some people say they need to be tight, others say they can be quite slack. I always thought they needed a pre-load.

Hi,

I have a Harrison M250 which I have owned for about 30 years. I've never been happy with the turned finish. I've tried all sorts of tools and angles and I still don't get as good a finish as I used to with a Smart and Brown Sabel that that cast iron plain bearings and a glass hard mandrel. I've adjusted the bearings as described in the manual. I only post this because I was watching the video about Colchester lathe manufacture and it was saying how good the taper roller bearings are and how great the finish is on the part being turned. I just wonder whether others have the same issue?

Thread: Centre finding
25/04/2020 08:14:41

That's interesting , how do you get spotting drills? I've always struggled starting holes with centre drills. Back to the thread I have the same problem with edge finders. I've been trying to work out how to make an optical edge finder.

Thread: Shoe repair glue advice?
17/04/2020 14:55:35

I've always found that cyanoacrylate [super glue] works best for shoe repairs where the rubber sole has come away from the leather . I mend all the family;s shoes this way and they stay stuck. You have to hold the join together until the glue sets.

Thread: 3 for £1 Subscriptions for ME and MEW
16/04/2020 16:17:28

I upgraded my digital subscription to print plus digital on the 20th March. I've not yet received a print copy despite all my efforts to get it sorted out. Perhaps I should have just got 3 for a £1?

Thread: ARC Digital scales converted to mains power.

I've got a similar one on my mill and on my vertical height gauge. I'm just in the habit of turning them off as soon as I've made the reading.

Thread: vfd question
03/04/2020 17:42:53

Hi thanks Martin, adjusting P06 did the trick. I only want the higher speeds for very small drills but it also means I can gear down further. I think now that about 2 to 1 is the useful speed range of these things. It's also taught me why my milling machine has a brushless dc motor rather than a 3 phase motor. The brushless dc motor still has bags torque at low speed, the belt slip is the limiting factor there. It's a pity it hasn't got a back gear but I can't see any way to fit one.

03/04/2020 10:15:06

Thanks for your help Martin. I've got it running pretty well now. I've set the speed to 990 rpm on the pulleys and at that and with a 2A max I can drill 1/4 holes in steel no bother with the speed reduced to about 600 rpm. I've checked the actual current by changing P62 to read current and it's just about 1A while drilling so I don't know why it cut out before. I have been looking up other forums about using these motors at higher frequency and they suggest it's fine to run at up to twice speed for a 1400 rpm motor because the construction is the same as for a 2800 rpm motor. I can't however adjust the frequency above 60Hz for some reason even thought the manual says 0-400Hz. The motor is a Teco Westinghouse and the plate says it is also for 60 Hz.

02/04/2020 20:13:26

I've set up as you suggested Martin. It runs fine but of course the torque reduces severely as the speed drops. I find that trying to reduce speed below 50% and trying to drill a 1/4 inch hole the drive cuts out Err6 which is overload. I've got the current set at 2000mA. What do you think I could safely increase it to?

02/04/2020 14:04:22

Thanks, I'll set those as you suggest. It does run ok, I've set all the current maximums to 1400ma, I found how to use the shift key to set things quickly. I've got P34 set at 10Hz/s and it is fine. It is for a drilling machine so i don't anticipate high loadings. I tend to use little drills, if I want to drill a big hole in steel I can still use the pulleys to change the speed.

Hello Joseph noci, thank you for your post which is very helpful. I am setting up a 0.45kw at1 vfd and would like to ask about some of the settings please. P0 to P10 . P2 is 35 volts, what should I set this at? The motor is a 0.25kw 3phase delta connected.P4 is 4hz, again what should this be? P34 is 10hz, should I change this? P78 is at 9000ma which is way high, It takes about 15 minutes of holding the button down to reduce it to 1400. [ rated current plus 20%] I've done this but I would like to know if I have to reduce P79 through P83 as well. They are all 9000ma. Thank you! John

Thread: Sourcing gunmetal for leadscrew nuts.
31/03/2020 09:04:32

Have you thought of just casting your new nut in white metal around the leadscrew? I think there has been a Model Engineer article about how to do this . It was many years ago, perhaps someone can find it.

Thread: New Subscription
30/03/2020 19:22:54

HI Neill, it is for Model Engineer. I did wonder If I had just missed the date but looking at my subscriber date it says 15/3/20.

30/03/2020 17:34:23

Hi, I changed my subscription recently from digital to print plus digital. This started on 20/3/21 but I haven;t received any print copies. I've tried contacting Model engineer but had no reply other than the automatic acknowledgement. I wonder if there's now a problem with sending out print copies. Does anyone know how I can contact anyone about this please?

Thread: Opensource Ventilator Project
28/03/2020 08:23:45

I see that in the news today they have a 3D printed ventilator designed and up and running in Spain. They are making all files available. It would be ready for production very soon.

Thread: The last straw!

Superheater tubes? I bought a stainless steel rack at IKEA for about £3 with the idea of using the tubing for a super heater. A lot cheaper than buying SS tubing.

Thread: Powder coating
10/03/2020 08:20:44

That's interesting, does anyone know the reference? I also looked up Gunkote on Amazon and there was only heat resistant aerosols, not the real stuff.

09/03/2020 08:30:45

hi Ian, thanks for the picture of your powder coat gun. How does that work? There doesn't appear to be any electrostatic generator.

08/03/2020 13:27:58

That;s very interesting because i want a coating for steel and brass which can be overpainted and doesn't flake off. This was why I am interested in powder coating. Is the primer applied using a powder coating gun? Specifically what primer is it please? I've found by experiment that ordinary Screwfix galvanising primer can be stoved at about 150 C and it makes it adhere a lot better.

Thread: Archive on Pocketmags

I would like to know that as well because not only is Flash support ending the latest versions of software don't even allow its use. Many people don't think Flash should end because 1] It is Free.2] It has features the replacements don't have.
