Rick, Nice bit of lateral thinking there. A relief when things come together. Another solution would be to cut a groove across a few end threads so that they act as a form of cutter. I've done this on many occasion when cleaning out/tidying tapped holes, and it works a treat. Geoff - Back on the FeedRod motor now that all machines are up and running. |

. . . I'm sorry to have to tell you that things get worse after you've passed the three score and ten! Oh thank you so very very much for that lovely bit of insight Geoff - I'm just a month passed that point, BUT things appear normal! |

Mike, Thanks for that, but strange they don't use the footage in their adverts. Still NOT real world though. When using a saw you are pushing material through against resistance, not pussyfooting as the inventor was with his finger, and the reason why fingers disappear so quickly. However, that would have prevented my palm from being lacerated, and will stop people loosing digits! It still took guts from the inventor to try it for real though, and hats off to him for that. Will it make operators less careful I wonder? He he, I can just imagine young, and not so young, bloods taking bets on who will be the first to take it for a test drive, using a real live and attached finger. Geoff - Darn good invention though. |

daveb, Need another brilliant suggestion in preventing rain from being blown in under the door please. It is South facing with the bottom level with the driveway, it being part of the Carport extension, and when South West winds blow, as now, it howls up the road driving rain water under the door. If I put a step inside, someone, me no doubt, will be flat on their face PDQ tripping over it. I have fitted one of those brush type wind-stops to the bottom of said door, and although it stops wind and leaves blowing in, no so with water. May have to go for one of those low profile rubber/plastic humps for the door to either butt up against or slide over to make a seal. Geoff - That bleep bleep door is really trying my patience now! |

Eug., You are correct regarding PTFE. Very slippery stuff, but it WILL creep unless 'contained' in some fashion. Headache so no Workshop today. Geoff - Bummer or what, with all machine ready and waiting |

Thanks Neil. Wouldn't dream of fitting it between the VFD and motor. Forgot to mention that I've added more photos to the Album. Geoff - Time to order that button |

Been reading my collection of 'Ours', and last night my eyes where out on stalks when I saw the article that will most definitely be of great assistance when/if needed. My 1935 Austin Seven has Babbitt bearings, and I've searched and found very complicated ways of re-metalling the big ends, but once again 'Ours' has come to the rescue. Vol. XXXVIII. No. 884 has an article describing the most simple way of doing just this. Geoff - I just love how they just got on and did it in the past. Edited spelling Edited By OuBallie on 07/11/2014 11:02:09 |

!WHOOHOO, WHOOHOO WHOOHOO! Ad nauseam. All of my machines are now running at frigging last! Finished the TS last night after cleaning out the power feed gearbox, new oil and V-belt attached, and it works. Just need to get oil into the table reservoir, but any advise on achieving this welcome. I wonder if anyone has spotted the 'problem' with the machine? Not too serious but needs replacing as soon as I've done the lathe FeedRodMotor One thing on the list is to fit a big red emergency 'Off' button on the front of the VFD enclosure as the 'buttons' on the unit would be difficult to operate in a hurry. Can the emergency button be inserted into the 240v live feed to the unit? It's taken me since 2008 to reach this point, but oh so satisfying to now have them all working. Geoff - Ek is nou baie gelukkig |

Shaun, Oh how I like that. !A man after my own heart! I was burgled whilst upstairs sleeping, when renting in Bradford. Not a pleasant feeling coming down in the morning and seeing a letter I needed to post lying on the floor, then noticing the stuff the effing counts had taken. They must have had a child helping, as he/she used the narrow (horizontal) kitchen window to gain access, then open the door. Geoff - Tom Senior mill 99.99*% done. Just need to replace oil in the power feed gearbox. |
Thread: Workshop size |
06/11/2014 11:48:40 |
Rick, Think of how much space you think you need, then double it. My Workshop is a '70s garage, that is bigger than the cubbyholes provided today, but I wish it was twice as large. The biggest problem, however, is that nature absolutely abhors empty spaces, so it's soon filled up and the merry-go-round starts. Catch 22 at its best! Geoff - Finish the TS today with luck |

Notice that the guy demonstrating the 'Sawstop' isn't confident enough to use his own hand or finger. One of my customers was a surgeon, and one day Dad described to him how he had removed the tip of his middle finger, whilst using the EmcoStar planer making patterns, the surgeon then said:- "Machines will remove limbs and body parts quicker than anything else!" There spoke a man with experience. Geoff - That machine has bitten me as well now! |

Bert, The new CEO in her wisdom decided that Groups needed to be brought up-to-date and has succeeded in killing them/it off. I did belong to about twenty Groups, but since she foisted NEO on us, all but two have died, with neither a new post or member in the year since. How anyone can be so stupid and/or pig headed is beyond me. Beggars belief that she is happy at destroying what was a treasure of information. Geoff - I've given up on and refuse to have anything to do with Yahoo now. |

NJH, "Smart@rse!" Ian, Normal door, and only opening outwards as there is a down-pipe in the way that would stop it opening inwards and flush with the wall. Carport extension at side of bungalow. daveb, My hat of to you! When I read 'If the door is wood, plane an angle on top (low side out) so the water runs of.' I just shook my head, at myself. What can I say except why the ^%*^%# didn't I think of that absolutely perfect solution!" So bl@@dy simple and easy to do, so thank you! Rip-off Britain rears its ugly head once again - Privately run parking now at Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital, with NO concessions for the disabled or reduced fees if you have to wait for treatment! You're right Tony, it could have been so so much worse. The injections prior to stitching felt worse than the actual blade tearing flesh. Instinctive reaction in pulling my hand away no doubt prevented more damage being done. A couple of inches further up or down the hand would have been a different story all together. Must add remote emergency stop buttons to the VFD units, as mentioned by Neil. Geoff - Spare ribs tonight I think. |

More work done on getting the motor fitted onto the Tom Senior column, but tomorrow is Hospital time, so finish on Thursday Yet another attempt at stopping rain water from sitting on the top of the outward opening Carport SideDoor, for it to cascade down when opening the door. Suggestions welcome on how to cure this problem please. Her indoors not amused, and neither am I, at getting a face full of water. Geoff - Just days away from having all machines working at last. |

That was a close call Andrew and happy nothing serious happened! Now I, however, went one step further and had a contretemps with a spinning circular saw, putting my LH palm down onto the blade, and my fault entirely, as some years earlier I had removed the blade shield and overarm in order to saw larger pieces of sheet, and now don't remember where the arm is. A strange feeling of flesh being torn rather than sliced or cut, and I knew immediately how STUPID I had just been. I knew to press all the fingers of the hand against the gash to prevent bleeding, and only a couple of small drops, but the most amazing thing - NO pain whatsoever. 999 of course, but all ambulances where busy, so other half took me to Norwich A&E. Being a nurse, she removed the four stitches when the time came, and I was utterly surprised at the total lack of pain when they came out. Anyhow, the old adage 'A photo is worth a thousand words' or such like, so photo herewith to show what happens when things come together in the right sequence and conditions. New Album added with two further photos. Another close shave was whilst slicing wood to make the fronts for all those shallow drawers, the blade caught the just sawn off piece and flung it towards my left eye. It just bounced off! I had JUST put on one of those full face polycarbonate shields, and it still has the ding in it to remind me of what could have been. I shudder whenever I think of those two near misses. If the photo makes everyone think about safety, I'll be happy. Geoff - It just takes a split second to change your life for good!

More photos just added to the Album. Replies: Bob, Details of mounting the BLDC please. Les & Bob, Cannot see any terminal cover or info about the motor. As can be seen in the photos, the motor is at the rear of the column and up against the wall, and even a mirror doesn't show any plate that may of course be on the underside of said motor. General: Fitted the new pulley to the motor shaft then an 'Oh' as the largest step prevented the motor from being bolted to the upright, so four spacers made from 20mm sq tubing and all well. Now came the time to 'gird ones loins' and heave that combination up onto that aircraft carrier size plate on top of the milling machine, and catch my breath once done. Now to get that unwieldy assembly into place to slide into the square 'dovetails' but an 'OH B@LL@cks' as the pulley got in the way! Once I'd calmed down and thought in a calmer mood, I realised that the only solution was to remove one of the pulley steps, and for some reason chose the largest diameter step, so off it came, into the lathe and the use of parting tool and boring bar had that step cleanly sheared off. Didn't fancy reducing it to swarf, so now have two pieces of possible useful packing. Pulley back and it all fitted as before, ordered a V-belt for motor to intermediate pulleys and wired up the VFD whilst waiting for the belt. I could probably remove the motor spacers, but life's just too short, so they are there for keeps. Switch everything on, twiddle the VFD frequency knob, and motor sprang into life, for the first time since I got the machine. I did a jig around the Garage floor in celebration and relief. The VFD is on a bracket that hangs from the OverheadCrane DIN rail, and easily taken out the way. Just need to sort out the table power feed now. Bolted one of the aluminium trays and the packing block set to the LH and RH side of the column respectively. Geoff - Finish the Tom Senior next. |

!WHOOHOO! It's actually running, after sitting in the Workshop since 2008 Haven't used it in anger yet, but photos and details to follow. Just one more thing to do, and that's to connect power to the Power Feed motor, but I need help please with wiring it up. The machine came with a box of switches and cable, but no info on how they should be connected to the motor. There is a connection box on the side of the motor, with five wires coming out, namely, white, red, green and two yellow. No idea if the motor even works or not. Geoff - Satisfactory week
