Thread: Spitzy model glow engine |
04/08/2016 20:30:51 |
From a friend in Canada has come the offer of a Spitzy 4.6cu inch 1950s vintage glow engine, minus its piston and con rod. I have not heard of this engine and a Google search did not produce any hits so I wonder if anyone out there has any information regarding it. I shall enjoy bringing it back to life when it arrives, but a bit of background always helps. |

Hi Neil, That is is a very interesting clip of Col Bowden in 1932 ,flying a model that must have been very similar to what the RAF had full size at the time. One thing I noticed is that the engine was running clockwise and the propellor was carved for that direction.I have had model engines since about 1947 and they have all been designed to run anti-clockwise. I would be interested in finding out when the change came about. As a two stroke will usually run either way and in those days everything was home made, including the prop, perhaps you made the decision of direction yourself. My recent involvement with the 4 stroke Vee-twin involved me in looking up timing charts in the various books I have and I will admit to being puzzled by the fact that they show crankshaft timing rotating clockwise. Thank you all for your comments and thank you Jason for adding the photos to my post. I would be interested in knowing where I went wrong. The red heads are painted. I tested several high temperature paints and the only one I found to be methanol proof also was Halfords own brand High Temp Paint, in a tin . The aerosol version is not methanol proof/

Yes, they are there if you click on "2 photos" i had a suspicion that all was not well , as this is my first time of uploading pics. |

Two pictures of my completed Chenery Aero Vee-Twin. Stats for the interested-Some 2000 hours of workshop time over a two year period. All machining carried out on a well "tuned" Clark Mini lathe and a Warco WM 14 mill, with self fitted DRO.Material kit and drawings from Hemingway kits. All work is to the drawings supplied and no modifications were introduced. I havnt fired it up yet as I have resisted the urge and am making a respectable test bench for it. Perhaps next week we will hear what sort of noise it makes Edited By JasonB on 08/04/2016 07:28:57 |
Thread: Cam maching by milling |
12/09/2015 16:40:17 |
I am well advanced making the Chenery Vee twin 4 stroke, from the Hemingway Kit.. I have always intended to use the machining offsets available from the Model Engine News site run by the late Ron Chernich and still available, for machining the cams. However, when I add the required information and press Go, a page comes up saying"A Plugin is needed to display content" I am using Firefox 40.0.3 and have Javascript configured.. Rons notes say you need a language"Applet" to make it work. At this point I am stumped! Does anyone know the answer to this ,or have knowledge of alternative tables for milling cams? |

Hi Grey, I think I was hoping you would say you had not drilled out the crankshaft, etc as plenty of oil would be thrown around for the big ends with the 10cc fill, as you had no success with the suction method. .I have also decided to make a deeper sump plate, probably with a fill/drain plug. Hi Grey, I am getting along with machining parts and query whether the oil ways drilled into the crankshaft are only necessary if a pumped lubrication system is used,as hinted at In Chenerys build notes. Your friend, Johns engine has a reservoir on the front bearing.Does the drilling for this only go through the ph bronze bush? Also where are you filling the 10 cc of oil into the sump from and draining it? Keith |

Hi Jason Thanks for that . The jigsaw puzzle is gradually taking shape! Keith

Hi Gray, I have printed the cam machining information. Are the dimentions of the cams correct for the V-twin as originaly drawn, or are they after your mods? My supplied gears are both metal, Steel for the camshaft and brass/bronze? for the crankshaft. I imagine tufnol will be somewhat quieter, but I will cross that hurdle later. Keith |

Hi Grey, Presumably the 10cc of oil gets through to the timing gears and camshaft? With a typical glow fuel with 20% castor oil, does that dilute the sump oil? I had a similar problem with the conrod fouling slightly,on a Sperry 5cc Diesel, and I cured that with some local scraping. I will look up the site of the cam machining right away. Keith |

Hi Gray, Thanks for your information. At the moment I am at the planning stage ,trying to absorb all the information I can find. One area that seems somewhat vague at the moment is cam design and timing, In fact ,on the drawings I have a major dimention is missing and I wonder if other builders have worked this out in different ways, hence timing problems. I intend to run this as a Glow engine. The Chenery notes I have state that valve timing is far less critical with a glow engine. Is this your experience? Another point I would like to solve is the one of lubrication. The drawings state"Oil is drawn from resevoir by crankcase depression" Presumably the resevoir is a seperate unit. Is this necessary with glow fuel? I notice that the twin carb engine in your photo has what looks like a screw down lubricator on the crankshadt bearing This is the point where oil enters ,as shown on drawing. Regards, Keith |

I am about to start on machining the Hemingway Kit castings, etc for this engine and wonder if anyone out there who has made/is making same , would be interested in sharing experiences. |
