Thread: Stephen Hawking |

Surely his work will shine a light on generations to come. However, I will remember him for that beaming grin when NASA provided him an opportunity to experience weightlessness in 2007. Rik |

Not seen one before but I'd guess it to be either an "external" tailstock "centre" or a planisher. Rik |

Thread: delivery |

We sent an old wooden chair of great sentimental value to the USA recently. The chair was packed in a very large cardboard box measuring 80x70x57 cm. and the package weighed 9 kilos. It was collected by Parcelhero courier at 16.30 on 20th Feb 2018 from our house in Bucks. and was delivered to a private address in Pennsylvania USA sometime on 22nd. Wife and I were astounded by the speed of delivery.

Thread: Coventry dies |
27/02/2018 17:55:15 |
I would not attempt to sharpen by hand - if you want to take advantage of the accuracy of your die head that is. You would increase your chances of finding some one who would do the job if you invested in a die sharpening attachment - they quite often come up on ebay though not always cheap. Then all you need to find is someone with a surface grinder. Rik |
Thread: Broken tap in copper boiler |
20/02/2018 10:02:05 |
Having developed an allergy to deodorants I was recommended alum crystal stick which I have now been using for years. I do not have a problem with BO or BA ( bothersome axillaries ) and I am pleased to say my armpits have not dissolved (unlike my brain). Once you have removed your busted tap Paul I for one would be very interested how you got on - good luck! Rik |
Thread: Digital Calipers from Lidl, Reliable? |
08/02/2018 19:16:46 |
I have two. They would have come from ALDI or LIDL. One is as good/accurate as a Mitutoyo and the other would be just as good were it not for the insulation tape holding the battery cover on. No complaints from me. Rik |

"Ratchet" stop with handle for engaging / disengaging from toothed gear. Very large clock?? Rik (Martin - you will need all your marketing talents to aim this in the right direction - "paperweight" is my best |
Thread: Tooling to buy with Warco WM250 and WM16? |

Ross - That is a standard 4 way tool post not a QCTP. Powered cross feed gets you finishes as good as horizontal powered feed - not essential but nice to have. DRO on the mill? Saves a lot of marking out, is more accurate and minimizes human error. Rik Edited By Rik Shaw on 04/02/2018 17:39:33 |

Hello Ross - I have had a 250v-f and still have a 16 mill. +1 for all suggestions from chaps on here so far. I would not be without my QCTP for my lathe. I currently have 17 tool holders but still could do with a few more. Also, you might consider making yourself a spindle turning mandrel as my 250v-f lowest speed was way to fast for safe screw cutting (for me anyway!) As for the mill, DRO scales fitted to the X and Y turn the mill into a virtual jig borer - highly recommended. And don't forget a centre/edge finding device or "wriggler", cheap as chips but essential. Rik Edited By Rik Shaw on 04/02/2018 10:22:44 |
Thread: What is a “Coventry die head”? |
29/01/2018 17:28:49 |
"Further to Rik's observation ... The individual inserts can be useful to the amateur, as thread chasers." Indeed they can Michael - here is a holder to do that very job which I made a while ago:
|
29/01/2018 08:45:18 |
Some years ago they were commonly used on capstan lathes in a production environment for “fast” threading of components – screws, threaded rod, that sort of thing. It is probably done by CNC these days and I would guess that the die head is nearly an antique! Rik |
Thread: what is this metal? |
26/01/2018 10:09:35 |
Sounds like it might be tungsten. If you srape it to copper colour and it oxidises back to grey/silver within minutes or less then it is almost certainly tungsten. Rik |
