Thread: So i want a mill
27/12/2015 12:40:12

I've just bought an SPG 2217-ll after a fair bit of looking round, bigger and cheaper than a WM14 and near enough the same spec as a WM16 with the added bonus of being MT3 against the Warcos' MT2. Showing as out of stock until January as I bought the last one in stock smiley it was £730. Pleased with it up to now, came nicely set up, cleaned, oiled and smooth..

"I'm can imagine"

I see what you mean....................................

Exactly, no point moaning about others who do not live up to your english laguage expectations and not bothering yourself. If it's unintelligible then ignore it, if it's ambiguous there is nothing to stop you asking for clarification.

Thread: What did you do today (2015)

Santa called early and dropped off a new mill, an SPG 2217-II, a lot beefier than the Clarke CMD10 that;s been used and abused over the past 10 years or so but surprisingly has only ever had to have one new motor drive gear. Nice to open the crate and find it not covered in packing grease but clean and well oiled but not so nice when you realise it weighs 110kg and had to be moved from the garage at the front of the house to the shed in the back garden including some steps. Had to unbolt the column and head from the base then just about managed to carry the base and table on my own but needed help to lug the column/motor. Now reassembled, trammed and has a lovely solid smooth action, well pleased with it and now ready to do some bigger heavier duty work ,

Thread: Extending thread on stainless steel bolts
07/12/2015 20:05:35

Thought A2 was 304L not just "plain" 304 as I've never had a problem with reworking A2 fixings compared to machining/threading 304 barstock.

07/12/2015 16:45:22

Are you sure they're 304 ? Has someone made them because the majority of commercial bolts are A2 or A4. If they're A2 then it's no problem to add thread if the shank is the right diameter if they're A4 then forget it. Done loads of rethreading A2 when I needed the right length of plain shank of a longer bolt, a decent HSS die lasts a fair bit on A2. Just get your mate to do it under your supervision though for that many.frown

Thread: how many 'one time' tools do you have?
30/11/2015 11:02:19

Loads of them, same as most toolaholics on here, Most are special bike and car tools used once for a job and not seen the light of day since such as the Mk3 Escort 7mm caliper allen key and valve lifter tool to let you change the valve seals from over 25 years ago and a 42mm socket from even further back to remove a pulley on a Citroen GS. Now there's a car that I haven't seen on the road for donkeys years and probably never will as they built the car round the motor making it nigh on impossible to do any work on them, wasn't worth trying to do any major work so they just broke down or rotted..

What about black cement dye? not expensive and I think JB Weld would probably work better as it's already half way there being grey. You'll probably have to do a bit of experimenting as a "proper" black can be a pain to obtain in a lot of dyeing applications, anodising, cloth dyeing etc

The cost to heat this house is only marginally more than a standard sized semi - around £2200 a year!

Marginally more than a semi? I wouldn't think £2000 or so was reasonable, at least not in this house, a 70's 3 bed detached with a 20 year old gas boiler system costs us £1200 a year gas AND electric. Also we are in the highish Staffordshire Moorlands which could never be classed as warm area.

Thread: Motorcycle General Discussion
30/10/2015 17:06:36

Bloody typical, a bike thread is started just as I have had to call it day after 40 odd years of biking crying, knees and back have forced it on me. Can't even face carrying on with my Kettle project and not being able to use it so that's just gone as well. At least I can keep in touch making bits for others as I've done for a few years and seriously consider the unthinkable of getting a scooter for knocking about on, I HATE cars with a passion, won't use the wife's unless I really have to.

Thread: Drilling big holes in 304 stainless steel
20/10/2015 19:54:34

Got to agree with the last two posts, I'd never move up a mm or two drilling 304, if it's a large hole then it's one 13mm drilled hole then a boring bar with plenty of coolant, but as JS says it's 303 every time you can as it cuts lovely and doesn't really heat/work harden.

Thread: Steel prices
18/10/2015 16:52:14

I thought steel prices had dropped through the floor, we used to get at leasr one scrap metal wagon on the estate every day and up to half a dozen on Saturdays and Sundays, typically as i've got some bits to get rid of I haven't seen one about for some weeks as if it's more trouble than it's worth

Thread: Shiply CAVEAT EMPTOR!!
16/10/2015 17:29:33

I'd never use it, you don't know who you might get most of the time. I was at a mate's workplace one day when a bloke in a white van from Shiply's turned up to collect a large foam gym mat from a neighbouring unit. He opened the van up and there was a dining table and chairs wedged alongside a large ancient grease covered piece of machinery. Neither was covered or tied down there were grease marks and gouges on the furniture and he proceeded to just throw the mat on the top of the machinery, luckily the mat was shrink wrapped. I always wonder what happened when he delivered the dining suite , "was like that when I picked it up mate" probably.

Thread: JB weld
11/10/2015 23:12:49

Simply because it works, it;s been around for donkeys years so has built up a following, it hasn't been messed with/neutered yet by 'elf and safety or the EU yet so carries on being used, unlike Nitromors, Hammerite etc. No doubt there are better modern epoxies but if it does the job you want why change?

Thread: Cutting a thread on 2mm and 3mm stainless steel rod.
16/08/2015 12:50:30

Using a decent die you won't need that much of a clamping force for 2 or 3mm stainless if it's the usual 303,304 or 316. Just been die threading some 4mm 303 and it was a doddle, I find I don't need to really clamp the vice up until doing M6 in stainless.

That's alright then smiley ....... weird though, I've always thought of brake fluid as pretty "neutral" can't remember it ever registering as a taste/smell and I've done a fair few strip and replacements.
