Thread: Is Model Engineering in Decline |
18/08/2018 19:11:46 |
I don't think its in decline simply a changing world, I have been fortunate enough to visit a Big Bang Fair where school children exhibited their work and have been blown away by the subjects covered and the level of knowledge and more importantly their massive enthusiasm for all forms of engineering. I also recall a comment made by a model engineer from a local group over 40 years ago saying the group was dying and its still there to this day, So obviously its a question that has been asked for some years and I am sure will be asked for many more years to come. |
Thread: when is a precision vice not a precision vice>? |

Hmmm, first post in over 4 years; it doesn't seem unreasonable to assume that it was at least partly in response to the previous post? Unless of course you're just randomly posting every few years.
I am aware its an old post and had completely forgot about it until I received an email informing me of new posts and I don't think its a reasonable assumption, I have appologised for any misunderstanding but clearly this is not enough for some people. Now just lets end the matter and move on. |

Wow I certainly hit a nerve there didn’t I, well let me say at no point did I make any snipe or argumentative comments I simply voiced an opinion and by having a view that clearly you disagree with I am being argumentative. Surely if someone can make the statement the reason there is no precision vices is because of the MAJORITY of people buying cheap which by your own admission you have then that statement should offend you more than anything I said. At no time did I mention you or your post or comments so I don’t understand why you are so offended. I thought I was posting a valid opinion and did not do it to offend, I also thought I was joining an open discussion but clearly by your post there is an exclusive club where the member PM each other when they don’t like a post. I do not understand why you have taken any comments to heart, I am genuinely sorry if I offended you as it was never my intention to offend anyone and happily apologies for that but I will not apologise for having an opinion.

Clearly I am missing something here, I thought the question was "when is a precision vice not a precision vice" not everyone slagging cheap vices or telling stories of how they purchased a piece of equipment that was not as good as they hoped. Surely if you purchase a vice that is sold to a standard and it does not meet that standard you return it, or is it a case of purchasing something hoping its going to be better than the spec offered and when its not blaming the supplier for selling exactly what was advertised. Do you buy based on the looks of an item rather than its specification, if the item does not have a specification or you can not trust the supplier then don't buy it unless your buying it as a project.

Thread: Edge finish on laser cutting. |
09/02/2014 09:29:25 |
is it not like everything else you get what you pay for, the faster machine runs the cheaper the job but the lower the quality everything i have had cut (6mm steel) has been ready to go and in my opinion very reasonably priced |

I was just wondering how many people were going to die as a result of this absolutely diabolical service a whole week of delay the world could come to an end. And god forbid anyone stealing a few minutes to eat. TONGUE IN CHEEK OF COURSE I think the internet has made us all a little to impatient I have only dealt with Chester once but they were extremely helpful.

Thread: Importing machinery from China |

I have been dealing with the far east for years and never had any issues with the chinese new year other than the delay but this is no different to the chrismas period in the UK As for importing yourself it could not be easier but why you would want to gamble hard earned cash for such a small gain is beyond me. |
Thread: Decent vernier height gauges ? |

Clive With all due respect you are assuming a component failure therefore speculating that all electronics will fail. I am no expert but I have electronic devices dating back to the seventies that still work very well, I have always believed that as in mechanical engineering there are tolerances which have a great influence on the life span of a component and equally the cost and that the same is true of electronic engineering. I do not believe the electronics used in the likes of an aircraft is deemed guaranteed to fail neither do I accept modern electronics are disposable simple for the reliability, its more because of the rapid advances and the modern believe we must have the latest model even if the one you have is fit for purpose. although this is not generally the case in the home workshop |

I'm not saying that Mitutoyo do not make top quality gear, because they clearly do. However I wouldn't count on the "whats good enough...." routine too much. The likelihood is that RR prepared a list of the equipment required, along with the standards required and sent it to 3 or 4 suppliers. Then they bought the cheapest package. cheers Bill
chances are you are wrong in implying RR buy on price while I am certain they are careful with their money the SPECIFICATION will state what is fit for purpose and Accuracy and Reliability will be key factors |

It's wise to regard any electronics as essentially disposable, even premium brands. WHY? To me that's a strange statement, I do not wish to be offensive but I am totally at a loss as to why anyone would make such a wild statement with no explanation.

Thread: Aldi Calipers... |
28/04/2013 13:31:10 |
Chris I have several pairs of cheap Aldi / Lidl callipers that are in a production environment and are abused regularly (that's why they were purchased) and they have lasted very well. I think you have just been unlucky and should be grateful it was a cheap set rather than a Mitutoyo set. I accept what you're saying about the screen being recessed on your mic but it's still possible to strike and break it relatively easy even on Mitutoyo products. |

Brilliantly put Russell and Jon surely you shot yourself in the foot with your comment "To cap it all my daughter has a degree in a totally unrelated field. It gained her entry in to a massive global organisation, 4 months in already tipped for European management. The difference there she applied every day 'learnt' stuff, second nature to us that you don't need to go to school to learn." if someone with a degree is tagged a waste of space then why did you let your daughter waste 4 or 5 years of her life studying for a degree and furthermore if she didn't need to go to school to learn then why did she waste so much time on education. Fortunately for your daughter not everyone is so anti the graduate or alternatively no louts applied for the position or she would have had no chance. I can also go along with the common sense approach as I dropped out of school with no formal qualifications and have had a reasonably successful career working my way up to managing director of a small but successful company but maybe I could have done better had I had an education at the outset who knows

An old saying and still often used . Is it True or False ????? Never heard it but get the gist and quite true on the saying. If i were to have a graduate in front of me with cv and a lout that had dropped out of school but had actually done some work, guess which one i would choose.
More the fool you, if you are to condemn a person because they make an effort to better themselves and get a degree you appear to see this as a tag of incompetence. I have experienced graduates who lack common sense and lack practical ability but I have seen equal quantities of none graduates the same I don't condemn either, I look at all their qualities after all the graduate has demonstrated they have an ability to learn where as in your simple scenario your so called lout could have come across closed minded employers like you suggest therefore they keeps getting jobs they are incapable of doing and that maybe why they are looking for work. As for no substitute for on the job training this entirely depends upon who is doing the training what usually happens with on the job training is "this is how its supposed to be done BUT I do it this way" and then the trainee becomes the trainer and he show the next person his way. So while I agree on the job training is a valuable part of the learning it rubbish to suggest its the only way.

Hi Jason You have forgotten to add in the lifetime value of the vice. Would the cheap vice need renewing every say 5 years while the precision vice lasts a lifetime. regards David exactly my point, if works but wears out after five years of production use or even 1 year but its going to be used infrequently its good enough for some but not for others. I keep saying fit for purpose |

Tony I couldn't agree more that people will take their own interpretation on any post and that's why everyone has the right to reply but Pete's opinions are obviously similar to yours so you agree with what he is saying. Pete is equally as guilty of taking his own take on postings as he has gone off on a tangent about RR quality and saying he did not mention this, no he didn't but he was implying this level of standard and all I was pointing out was not everyone needs that level or can afford that level. I could not not agree more quality costs, but rather than go on an on about the cost of quality accept that just because something is expensive its not the best. And equally there will be a product that cost less than he paid that will do the job. A perfect example of this is the thread about Aldi callipers where one person is disappointed with his callipers even though he states they are accurate and do exactly what was stated on the box and he paid £8.99 shocking they should have been 99p I have these and I also have Mitutyo both give the same reading but no way am I suggesting they are as good as the Mitutoyo but there are plenty of people who are using the Aldi callipers and have done for many years, however there are people who would not allow them in their workshop. I am not being personal when I disagree with an opinion just putting my point over I accept I may also use the wrong choice of words and someone may misinterpreted my meaning and equally I may misinterpret others but I will try and correct this as necessary. I think this thread is going around in circles because there is nothing new just a discussion about quality and not vices so in no way is this helping any so called newbie choose a vice.
