Les I have disconnected the motor and it runs OK on 12 volts the board does not work with a light bulb connected it still lights the fault lamp.I will fit a new board on the strength of these results.

Neil Thanks for the reply the mill was ruuning at half speed about 1000rpm with no problems then started speeding up. It now does not run. The test suggest was supply 12v to the motor need to identify which leads are to the motor then I can do this Thanks Olly |

My X3 milling machine died this weekend, it started by running fast and slow then stopping fault light on did it a few times then died. To me it seems like a board fault. The machine is a few years old and the gaurd circiut has been bypased. Arc Euro suggested testing the motor before the purchase of a new board unfourtumnately thier engineer is off sick and I am no electrician any help greatfully recieved on how to do it. Olly |

Alan To the best of my knowledge most two stroke glowplug engines run on a methanol castor oil mix, I dont know about the four strokes. You will need to alter the compression to run on metnaol you need to am at a head volume including the area above the piston of about 0.8cc this will run fine. Plugs for four strokes are available but if you cannot source one then a hot plug would be the best option to keep the glow plug alight. I have a two stroke Dooling 10cc racing engine originally spark ignition this runs very well as a glowplug engine but needs some nitromethane to make up for the lack of compression but in a model race car this only helps. I agree that more article writers are required to add other interests to the ME magazine, but, the requirements for them to publish an article are beyond my basic computer skills. I do write a few articles for an an online site. They sort out my amateur efforts and publish it. I am sure if they made it easier to submit articles then more may be forthcoming, most of us these days lead busy hectic lives and precious spare time is spent in the workshop when allowed and not in front of computer screens.

That brings back memories did my apprenticeship on Doxford and Garland & Wolff motor vessels in the early 70s the engine were opposed piston two strokes. I was deck officer and remember the 20 minutes it took to change the engine to diesel from heavy oil so that the engine could be manoeuvred. If you wanted to go astern you had to stop the engine and start it backwards Happy days Olly |

Thanks for the responses so far Michael its a single phase machine the electrian at work has offered the necessary kit to carryout the testing. Ian I have not worked it any harder than I did my Raglan Little john a similar sized machine not sure how big the motor was on that. MadMike hope its that an easy fix will talk to the electrician.

I have had this lathe for a few months and in general use everything works fine. This weekend I have been turning down steel bar working the lathe quite hard, fairly fast with a .060 cut and the turnings coming off blue. After a while when stopping to measure it will not restart. The motor is only warm to the touch if you can hold your hand on no problem. If switch it off press the red reset button inside the box on top it will sometimes start again. Or it will start after lunch. The problem must be heat related but what is the problem any ideas gratefully received.

Brian I dont know what you want to use it for, If it was me I would put my £200 towards something more modern that you can get parts for. For a lot of projects you will need a 3 jaw chuck with inside and outside jaws plus a 4 jaw independant chuck. A nice to have is a face plate. Unless the lathe comes with these you will soon be in the range of a modern chinese lathe they are not as bad as some will have you believe the big plus is most come with all the accessories you need to get going.

Any tips on machining this steel I intend to make a pair of bevel gears, and also the case hardening and tempering. The final application is a tether car gear gearbox so they need to be tough should rev to 20,000rpm Thanks

Make them from shim, clamp some shim between two peices of plate and drill the 3mm hole then put them on a mandrel with washers either side of the shims and turm to the diameter you want.

The other option for a quick build is the Popular range of oscilating engines from Reeves, I rermember building the Stuart 10V as a youngster took ages and never built a boiler no suitable soldering equipment for a boiler of the size required at home. But I do rember the first popular engine I built and a pot boiler fired by meths. I have a victorian steam launch powered by a popular V twin that is good fun to sail.

Hi Robert A few years ago I built a windernere launch powder by a Reeves V twin oscilating engine with speed control and forward and reverse the launch is about 3 feet long. The boiler is a horizontal centre flue fired with a petrol blow lamp very similar to the gas powered lamp in the picture above. The petrol blow lamps are no problem to build, run and provide a good source of cheap and ample heat to run a boat boiler. My experience meths is fired boilers is wick lamps and single cylinder oscilating engine. for my children to play with when they were younger. The straight runner I have is also fired with a petrol blow lamp for the flash boiler that will get up and plane just needs some one brave enough to ctach it the engine is Alan Raynams high speed marine steam engine and the boat is a copy of his Paprika. Not much help really. Olly |

Steve Yes you can get R8 collets, but also a full range of R8 tooling. When I bought my Sieg X3 I couldnt decide between 3mt or R8 an engineer advised R8 and thats what I bought significantly better than the mt 2 on my old mill. The main advantage is R8 tooling has a key way in it does not slip in the machine and it does not have to pulled up as tight with draw bar as mt tooling and consequentially you dont have to hit the draw bar as hard to release the tooling. For Christmas my wife bought me a digital subscription. Nice present I thought. But she recieved nothing via email or post, today she chased them for info on the subscription she got the subscription number and I had to log onto the website www.subscription.co.uk to activate. I couldnt find anything to activate the subscription. So I phoned them after a long wait they said the same thing asked how to do it, didnt know and couldnt help the system was down. They will ring tommorrow to tell me how. Considering the present was bought early December I am far from impressed. Olly
