Thread: Boiler calculations, end plates |
22/09/2023 09:51:06 |
As Pero has said "going back to the begining " and as Duncan has said ( in so many words ) this is destined to disappear up it's own fundamantal orifice. The O/P has a bit of scrap copper water or gas pipe and wants to build a boiler using this ? He has done the calculations for the stress in the shell and it works out safe, the end plate is under the same pressure but is flat - it needs stays, be they solid or tubular. A rough calculation at even 70 psi is that it will be under 2 bar/litre and not much bigger than a Mamod and only requires a safety valve. The calculations are in many books, 2 of which he has, After 3 pages of answers and other comments is this one NOT resolved ? Noel. |

The op asked about myford ML7 and Jason has pointed out this was a taper roller bearing conversion. One could safely go above the makers speed ratings with roller bearings. I take tit was in MEW ? Noel. |

Are the faces to be sealed flat/true, no burrs Etc ? Are the gaskets well made, holes not to big Etc ? Bolts/studs have long enough thread and not stripped ? Are you using the right type of gasket material ? I would use hylomar but that's what I have. I think there is more to this than just a gasket sealer ! Noel. |

Thread: Struggling to squeeze my balls hard enough |

I had to drill 3/8" holes in 2" hard steel balls used 2 myford face plates and 3 bolts to hold them together, trapped the ball in the hole in the middle and used a 3/8" carbide tipped drill in the tailstock on an S7. Noel. |

As an apprentice on a Harrison 10 lathe I had to make 400 parts for Rolls Royce aero engines inspection department accurate to .00025" with a micrometer, so in answer to your question YES accurate work can be done with out a DRO ! Noel. |
Thread: Milling on a mini lathe |

Where space is a problem then the milling attachment is an option, there were several makes. The one I have used is the Amolco, this is self powered and is bolted to the lathe bed over the cross slide giving vertical movement. Myford made a milling table that could be bolted to the cross slide to give T slots. As for books on milling in the lathe There is the workshop series No5 by tubal cain though there is a much earlier book by Percival Marshall, No 41, in the Model Engineer series, Milling in Small Lathes. This work was published when Model Engineer & Electrician was the title and cost 4d. Noel.. Edited By noel shelley on 20/09/2023 15:56:52 |

Like good custard - The plot thickens ! I take it we are talking MCBs ? Not RCDs? A fault that is nolonger there is going to be hard to find ! LED lights can be troublesome but both sets ? MCBs and RCDs can cause odd problems, easy, to spot with the right gear. Assuming you have MCBs can you swap another of the same value ? As Robert has said, leakage and load, A weak or worn MCB that was only just holding and then dropped, on reset it is now holding properly ? Then your into more obscure, mouse or other animal chews wiring, electrocuted, the carcass has now desicated and reistance has risen. Dampness, though that seems unlikely in view of what you have told us. Good luck. Noel. |

Welcome Gary, If you have questions or need advice this is the place to be. One thing to think about in 7.25 is that everything is HEAVY very in many cases. This fact came home to me when I bought a smallish 5" loco. Best wishes Noel. |

1/16" BSP ? Noel. |
17/09/2023 16:31:07 |
Firstly I agree whole heartedly with Luke R this is by the look of it a well made model, not a nuclear reactor approaching criticality ! A simple hydraulic test can be done, it has a gauge and hand pump, YES, YES, YES I know the gauge has not been calibrated against a known standard. I fancy the item near the chimney is the safety valve, The feed to the engine comes out of the firebox casing and runs to a standing valve ( or is it a lubricator) which controls the engine - there may even be a small degree of superheat as the pipe passes over the burners. Good practice would be to use a pressure gauge of 1.5X working pressure so 120=80 But an engine like this would run on 30 psi or less. Fill the boiler brim full and vent any air then slowly using the hand pump raise pressure and check that the gauge works first, if yes take it up slowly again to 60 or 80 psi ! If it hasn't split a seam or water is pouring out then it will be quite happy at 30 or 40 psi you wont need more. What's it's bar litre value ? If your anywhere near me it would be a pleasure to help get it running, send me a PM. Noel. |

For the sort of things we do I would recommend the 3M unitized discs, about 3" dia with the rolok attachment on a 4.5 angle grinder. They come in a wide array of grain size and for cleaning or satin finish are very good. They will take cast brass from as cast to satin, but be warned they are a lot more agressive than you might think. Their not cheap. Best used in the open as the particles will get everywhere. Noel. PS When they were first about, they supplied a kit with a range of grits and the rolok fitting at a reasonable price to get you hooked. |

I go along with Mike that the little valve may be a blower to help the fire draw but with propane this would seem unusual. If the boiler had been based on a design that used coal then that would be normal. That the pressure gauge max is 120 psi would give a clue that the working pressure is 80psi or less. Running on propane or butane will require the gas pressure to be just right and the air supply also - this may require a certain amount of adjustment to keep the flame on the burner. Yes the water level should be in the glass and 2/3 would be fine. The driven models look like the ones made by the german company Wilesco. Good Luck. Noel. |

This boiler is to be 2.54" od, the 3' of 3" tube, is this to be the shell of your more substantially boiler or is it to be the centre flue pipe of a much bigger boiler ? Noel. |

You don't say whether it is an RCD or MCB that is tripping ? Both can go out of spec and fail at lower trip currents. Was there a pre existing earth fault that now all is earthed up is showing ? 1.5mm cable is ample for the incoming. Power protection plug ? Disconnect JUST the vfd in the cabinet from the incoming and turn on - OK ? Check for loose strands short circuiting. You say the trip is very sensitive, normal RCD trip current is 30ma, has this regularly tripped and now failed ? Initial inrush current ? A simple wiring error, chech ALL connections. I take it you have no test gear ? You are working with MAINS voltage please be careful. Noel Edited By noel shelley on 16/09/2023 11:15:04 |

Now thats what you call an open grain castiron ! As to loctite use what you have or can blag. They all work. Cleaning the hole is vital for good results - acetone or paint thinners - cellulose. Noel |
