Thread: Lathe cabinet/box
21/01/2021 21:50:56

Found a couple of latches on Ebay and will try them out. Only £2.75 a pair so worth a gamble.

Re storing parts in the box. To clarify the work, the box stays normal way up. Only the lathe on its base plate is turned upside down to store and vice versa to use. The box is to make it a better height to work with when on kitchen table. I made the box deeper than lathe height, so that parts can be stored.

Hi Clive, as the thick lid is in the sides rebate and flush I do not think your method would suit, but might well help design some other method.

I had thought about toggle latches as I have a load of them but the latch needs to work round a right angle corner.

I will have to post a photo of the set-up.

I have built a box for my small lathe (14" long) and the lathe is mounted on a 20mm. thick piece of ply which is rebated into the 20mm. thick box sides.

When lathe is not in use I will just turn it upside down and any other parts can also be stored in the box. What I need to know is what can I use in the way of cabinet catches in order to secure the lid /lathe when in stored state.

Thread: chuck removal from speed reducer
04/01/2021 16:39:04

It is now removed. Thanks for info above. A chuck key did not work, but a good sized allen key tightened in the chuck jaws and then a good hit on that did work. 3/8 UNF thread.

I can now turn up a tapered mandrel with that size thread on other end to fit the small lathe I am restoring.

Thanks John,

Thought it might be but was not sure.

How did you remove it ?

Mike..

I have a Mason Master drill speed reducer and I wish to remove the chuck, a Jacobs Multicraft M6CG61. Having a problem shifting it. Are these screwed on or tapered ?

Thread: Lathe make ?
01/01/2021 14:21:34

I need to know the size of the small V belt on the above lathe?.

Pulley is definitely shaped for V belts and not round belting.

I need to know the size of the Morse taper in the tail stock.

Any idea where I can get a drill chuck to suit that same taper?

In additition, would I have to make my own backplate for a chuck for the headstock, or does any company stock chucks that would fit the headstock thread. (1/2" X 16tpi) ?

The triangular die cast piece had 17/6 in pencil on the side. 17shillings and six pence !!

This triangular item was in the box with the above lathe. Have no idea if it had any purpose other than storing odds and ends.

The Flexispeed looks to be the lathe make in question. Funny thing, there is one on Ebay at the moment and owner does not know what it is so may well message him with the above possibility. Thanks for input. Not sure what to do with it, might give it to a very good friend.

I have just been given this small (watchmakers ?) lathe by a friend .

Anyone got any idea of possible maker's name. Length is just over 12".

No motor, or chuck,sam_2113.jpg but complete with a few bits and pieces.

Thread: Diamond Drills
24/10/2020 16:25:27

Thanks for all posts, the last three or four most interesting. I have a spot welder and considered using that to soften the screw steel but can't get to the back of this trim for the other electrode. The item I am trying to remove is the cant rail (gutter rail) from a classic car and its made of unobtainium.

I have ordered some cobalt drills so will see what they do. I only need to remove the heads and then can remove rail and then I can attack what is left of the screw if not flush with the surface. The cant rails are going to be re chromed anyway so the slight scratch here and then is not too much of a problem.

Any normal good quality twist drills will not touch these screws. They are well hardened.

All I want to know is where to buy decent diamond drills. Have tried all the obvious methods.

No Good, a Dremel disc would damage the chrome brass strip that is held on with the screws as screws are countersunk.

I have to remove a dozen Phillips head self tappers from rusty steel plate and each one has rusted in tight. Nothing will shift them and can't use heat as they are next to fiberglass.I need to remove the heads so I can remove a chrome trim piece that is unobtainable, so must not damage it.

Where can I buy decent diamond drills from ? The Chinese ones last two minutes and then go blunt, so no go there.

Thread: Drilling brass
24/07/2020 17:43:47

First one now ok now, thanks to various tips. Now just one more to do.

Fingers crossed. Perhaps you get better with practice !!

Sorry, the drill broke, not the screw. Senile moment !!

I will take on board the above comments and see what happens. I was withdrawing the drill each 1/16" or so but it did not work.

Mike.

24/07/2020 09:06:10

I have to drill a 1/16" hole right through a 2BA brass screw, from end to end on the lathe..First attempt, the screw broke at a depth of half in or so. The screw is just over an inch long. I was going to drill from each end, but did not get that far !!

Any tips here, lubricant/speed etc.
