Thread: Dust Extraction
09/02/2022 10:24:07

Had you noticed in the Hints and Tips section above your thread is the topic 'Another scam' - https://www.model-engineer.co.uk/forums/postings.asp?th=176738

Chris Crew is selling a Drytex dust extractor! Dunno if it is what you need but might be worth the contact.

Thread: Soluble suds disposal

I have a couple of gallons of very used soluble suds (Rocol) to dispose of. How/where can I do this safely and legally?

I have a combination set marked Ministry of Supply. This CWC army watch with arrow. 16050892025946497503347136689713.jpg

The British Horological Institue may be able to help with identifying this watch. They have recently had a series of articles in the Horological Journal about watches in the Services.

It looks nice. I want one!

I tried to tap a chunk of steel M12 and it just turned against the torque. Then I found a 'Studding Connector' in the orbital Fasteners catalogue, (www.orbitalfasteners.co.uk) - usual disclaimer - M12x36 works for me, basically a long threaded nut - see www.orbitalfasteners.co.uk/search?term=studding+connector

Well done.

Thread: Pesky Government Announcement!

Maybe I have missed something, but am I the only one that uses a wind up gramophone and sometimes headphones and a cat's whisker?

I really enjoy winding up the whirly thing and doing a smidget of engineering whilst it runs down.

Thread: The sneering detractors

This is why I love this site! From carpers, through Latin to poetry - what a great bunch you are!

I like to brows now and again, but would end up filling all my mangling time if I followed it all.

That should have read: ( ' tails ' )

Smiley was auto!

Safe working practice also includes the electrics: a number of times I have been tempted to write to the ME to point out some dodgy wiring in the background of a photo but the trouble is that I usually get my MEs secondhand from a friend some months after publication...

Incidentally, some time ago I had a motor go flash-bang on me. This was written up at the time in MEW. Anyone with an older machine (like mine) might find it worthwhile having a Portable Appliance Test on the motor. The internal leads ('tails' on my old Hoover motor were rubber and had perished - a potential fire.

Have just seen the film - not what I anticipated but still fun.

And keep mangling metal!

This has come a long way from 'The Carpers' and I think that is a good thing.

And I may have started somethnig with the Latin - congratulations to all of you who can do it.

And to add to this day of wonder: I was talking to an acquaintance in front of a (sadly closed) pub and out of nowhere a blue tit alighted on my shoulder. - a real gem of a day!

Cheers all, am about to watch Arlo Guthrie's 'Alice's Restaurant'.

Keep mangling metal,

Oh, and I forgot to say that I have also fitted a new geared motor drive to the traverser of my model railway (Sarum Road) ready for a now cancelled exhibition.

A good mate said to me once about the carpers: 'Just ask them what they have made recently'

Here's what I did recently, a completely new design of regulator based on fullsize rather than the drawings:

How about you Mike, what did you do? smile

Andrew

Have replaced a split pin(!) on my Kennedy saw frame with turned pin, then repaired it when crank fell off(!!), added a no volt release switch and microswitch to turn it off when the cut finishes. Then made a sort of horizontal drill fixture for a model boat I am building, re-arranged workshop, turned and fitted registers for my telescope (small cups fixed to patio for the legs) and started to learn Latin for the first time since school 50 years ago. Sorted out a glory-hole of bits.

Next?

Usually works.

Sometime ago I posted a query about getting water up a hill to a hospital in a 3rd World country and was overwelmed by the thoughtfulness and helpfulness of the replies - over 50 of them!

Don't give up, there are a lot of good [people out there.

Thread: Testing for isolation

Our first day on our sparky course we were warned aginst using a neon screwdriver. An apprentice had dropped his gaffer's neon screwdriver into a puddle so that when used, there was a direct short across the neon and it killed the sparky.

A proper tester is the only way., I use a Dilog Combivolt.

You might make a mistake but electricity never does.

Thread: Pumping water up a hill

Message from friend that runs this trustto all you helpful souls:

Kwamkono Disabled Children's Trust would like to thank everyone who have suggested ways to get water up the hill at the centre. These will be very helpful when we investigate possible solutions next year, unfortunately finding information about available supplies and equipment in rural Tanzania is not easy.

Thank you once again

WOW! This is what is so great about the hobby and engineers! 33 response in less than a day. Thank you everyone. Thank you!

I have passed this link to my friends since they can read these responses knowing the local conditions far better than I do.

Great hobby and great people.
