Thread: Identifying Spur Gears |
26/11/2014 17:38:20 |
Contact HPC gears, they used to be called Hinchcliffe Precision Components, they have a wonderful catalogue with thousands of gears in it. Both Imperial and metric, all you need to do is measure your gears and compare with theirs. There are many charts of the different sizes available. The staff are extremely helpful. Hope this is some use. Martin R. |
Thread: noisy gas burners. poker type |
23/11/2013 14:29:37 |
Is there anyone who experiments with making poker type gas burners please ? I have made many successful burners which take in secondary air, but every poker type I make will run silently most of the time and then whistles loudly. Changing the number of slots in the burner, or gas jet position, or size of air holes does not seem to make much difference, even pointing the slots along the burner tube is not really much use as a long term cure. Any offers of a "magic bullet" please ? |
Thread: End of an era...or the start of a new age? |

removal of print copy of ENGINEER, Please can anyone tell me if this may be the ultimate fate of Model Engineer and Model Boats magazines? Is it my imagination, or are a lot of readers comments, discussions and dissent already missing from Model Engineer? I have been wondering for many months if someone was already preparing to remove the hard copy of the magazine. Recently I have found myself thinking that there was nothing except good news in the magazine, does anyone agree with me? Anything other than articles seems to be on the website. Does it mean that a digital copy would be stuffed full of adverts getting in the way of the actual magazine content? martin ranson |
Thread: Steam engine timing |
25/06/2012 09:21:21 |
wolfie not sure from your question what sort of engine you have .. the answer from Jason B reads as a stuart S 50 .. if so then there are 2 things to set up .. FIRST make the valve travel equal at each end .. this can be done with the valve eccentric set anywhere in relation to the crank throw .. set it by adjusting the linkage so that the slide valve uncovers each end of the ports by an equal amount as the crankshaft is rotated by hand .. when this is done the position of the eccentric can then be set in relation to the crank .. turn the engine so it is at top or bottom centre .. slacken the grub screw on the eccentric and position the valve so it is just cracking open the port .. the eccentric wil be in advance of the crank by 100 degrees or so ( right angle plus a bit ) .. gently lock the eccentric in this position .. turn the engine by hand .. watch the slide valve move .. if it looks good at each end, put it all back together .. tighten the eccentric and try it on steam .. my engines run very sweetly like this .. hope I have got the right type of engine .. hope this is useful martin |
