Not sure of size of boiler on Simplicity roller. This code does not apply for boilers having a design pressure of less than 250 kPa (36 psi), a barrel diameter of less than 100mm {4"} and a water capacity of less than 1 litre. I am not familiar with a GWR style water column. Anyone have a photo/drawing ? Paul Edited By Paul Lousick on 16/04/2019 13:41:51 Paul, The boiler is approx 30" long x 7" diameter running at 90psi for a 41/2" scale engine, so would apply I guess, and a standard design. |

I wonder how 5.4.3 affects the positioning of the upper water gauge fitting on the Simplicity roller - the top tapping is fitted to the lower part of the cylinder which connects directly into the steam space between the boiler and the cylinder, leading to the regulator. |

Interesting how the general public still use a product that was banned by the MoD back in the nineties. Mind you, the product they replaced it with - PX24, is about as much use as a chocolate fireguard. Regards |

Talking about rediculously priced, this **LINK** has been coming up for several years off and on - delusions of grandeur possibly?? That's nothing! You could buy over a dozen of those for the price of this book, and still have change: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Antique-1907-Russian-Empire-book-Gas-oil-other-internal-combustion-engines/183665321481?hash=item2ac34e6609:g:y8kAAOSweI1cVNYe I contacted the seller to find out what makes it so much more valuable than the English language equivalent which typically sells for about £20, but for some reason haven't had a reply. George May have forgotten to convert from Russian Roubles - 14,499 = £170.00, sounds more acceptable - Ish. |

One can either copy that listing to one’s bookmark list or mark it on the epay watchlist. Either way works but epay clearly prefer the latter as they stand to gain from that! The seller doesn’t know it is being watched, if the former. I watch to check whether some items, ridiculously priced, actually sell. Even when relisted, again and again (sometimes the price comes down to a sensible level). Some to keep abreast of current market values. Sometimes to collect together several different options on the same item to compare specs, prices, value for money etc. There is little incentive to remove those watched items, so sometimes I don’t bother. Seller’s problems are theirs, not mine. I watch what I choose, with no consideration to the potential seller. Talking about rediculously priced, this **LINK** has been coming up for several years off and on - delusions of grandeur possibly??

Thread: TIG welding copper boilers. |
26/03/2019 11:34:28 |
I've TIG Brazed a couple of copper boilers, but you need to put the same amount of background heat in as normal the TiG unit was used as I didn't have any Oxy-acetylene handy at the time. The TiG arc is very localised and braze / silver solder won't run into a flange properly unless background heating is used as well, and its quite easy to melt the copper if you're not careful. Hi If this post isn't dead - does anyone have any simple plans for this device. The links to a similar thread appear to have expired It has been suggested to me to help centre work in a 4 jaw chuck. Snag is the old guy who described it to me said the hardest part was drilling a ball bearing. I think he was having me on, but I can't be sure
Any comments welcomed
regards Bernard
Edited By Bernard Greatrix on 08/03/2019 21:24:51 I used a phosphor bronze ball in mine. Regards |

I visited the shop back in january to collect my Simplicity 4 1/2 boiler, and to say I am delighted with it is an understatement, Its a difficult build at best as a number of the dimensions have to be calculated from the installation of other parts. Helen coped with this admirably, and when you consider tha amount of work involved and the cost of the raw materials I was more than happy with the price. Yes, as I mentioned before there was a delay, and a lack of commnications due to an email address change and the sheer amount of work Helen had been asked to cope with, made for a worrying time as I too thought I may have lost my deposit. (thanks to all those on here that let Geoff know I was commenting on the forum, I hope someone pays that forward). As Dave Halford says it is a tiny business, and one that is practising a dying art, and for all I know, probably the only one of its type in the country, when I visited there was a job in progress for half a dozen of the same type of boiler for a model engineering society all wanted in a very short period of time., its just difficult to envisage, when you are sat at home, the sheer amount of workload that the business carries out. Regards A very satisfied Western Steam customer.

Some interesting stuff, although I would question thomas oliver 2 costs for care homes. My late father who died almost a year ago was paying £900 a week, for perfectly satisfactory but not outstanding care. Thankfully he didn't have to avail himself of it for too long. Thomas does make the very valid point that should you have need of care and have any significant savings they disappear rapidly, and my question to my accountants as to what I should do with my fathers bequest was, spend it otherwise you'll give it away to the government, directly or otherwise. The state pension is also under some scrutiny by me. I received a letter from the DWP last week inviting me to claim my state pension, I was 65 at the beginning of January and I am informed I can claim state pension from May this year, thus far so good and in checking my NI contributions I find I have 47 fully paid up contributing years so you would imagine that apart from a small period of contracted out SERPS, I would get most of the £165 a week. Apparently not, prior to 2010 you needed 44 years NI contributions, after then the contributing years were reduced to 30, so I was still ahead, however in 2016 the period was increased to 35, and since at that time nobody by decree had more than 30, I find at 65 with 47 years of contributions I am only entitled to 33/35ths of the state pension, less my contracted out SERPS. On this basis it is going to be 2021 before anyone will have enough NI contributions for a full state pension by which time retirement age will be what, 67? Am I alone in thinking that the contract between myself and the government established in 1972, of which I have fulfilled my side, has just been thrown away for political expediency. Right that's purged the spleen, I feel better now, if no less disgruntled. Mr Angry of Glasgow Edited By Martin Shaw 1 on 21/02/2019 21:36:15 Good points Martin, I'm about 18 months younger than you and have to wait until I'm 66 before I can draw, mine, for my partner, like you born in '54 (?) , she has to wait an additional 5 years and 7 months. " Ahhh, haven't got a Sieg, so didn't bother reading the thread, does make it awkward when people cross posts. FWIW I bought my Super Major (standard) with DRO in 2001, and its fine. Maybe like the Rover V8 engine the same tooling was used throughout the entire production run and might be getting a little tired. would still really like to know what the problem with roberts machine was - or was just mis measurement??
Regards p.s. we borrowed a Sieg Mill from Ketan a couple of years back for evaluation, and everyone here including the apprentices thought it was the nuts of the mutt. Edited By FMES on 21/02/2019 14:10:48 |
