No point in adding a new post.

I was given a copy of ME recently which had part 18 of a series by Doug Hewson on improving Britannia kits.

I own a kit Britannia and would be interested in getting hold of the series. Does anyone know how long it ran and the magazine numbers?

I had a model A and the worst thing I did was sell it. It was a 5" as well. The Chester I bought is ok but I still miss the Boxford.

I cant see the benifit in fitting a clutch. For production engineering maybe but for modelling one off's ?

Threading. I turn the chuck by hand with a tap or dye.

Hello Robert, There is a trough in the parts. There is no way its a guard though if its fitted with double sided tape. It would not cover all the moving parts anyway. It would also need cutting to shape as well. No tape supplied.

I have the feeling that mine had been to someone and been returned for some reason. The paint on things was a bit chipped and scuffed?

A few weeks ago i bought a drive for the traverse on my Warco WM18 milling machine. This evening i got around to fitting it.

Typically Chinese. I tried to follow the sparse instructions which amounts to a rubbish sketch and a few lines of instruction.

The winding handle is removed and the yellow casting at the end of the bed. This allows another supplied casting to be fitted. OOPs we don't mention you will have to drill the casting to be able to mount the new end casting. And just for the jest you can only use two of the four mounting holes as two of them half align with existing holes. There are two new dowel hole to be drilled as well, sorry we do not supply the dowels either! Did i mention there is no way of aligning the new casting while marking out the new holes?

Any how i managed to get it to fitted and working. At first i thought i had miss aligned the gears that mesh together under the unit as it was very noisy, so i removed it ran it on the bench. Not good, the thing sounds terrible. If anything it sounded better back on the machine than off.

I then proceeded to fit the centre switch that stops it when it hits a striker. This fitted ok - no bolts supplied and more tapped holes. The stops, slide in a small groove on the front of the table, this is after you have made them fit. The angles of the slide blocks and the track is different!!

I tested it stops the motor which is does, but only when you press the opposite side to the travel ! DOH. This i can change the wiring on but it look to me like its made to be mounted the wrong way up which would switch the handing but then you would have the switch box protruding up above the bed. Not much cop i think?

I also have some spare bits which are not listed and god knows what there for?

I would also question the CE marking as the gears are exposed underneath the table and a nice finger trap.

Warco would be advised to put together a pamphlet of how to fit one of these units and to look into the CE marking side by supplying a cover for the gears.

I know there sold on a budget, but safety is paramount, is some one looses a finger end in the gears they will end up with a claim.

I change mine over a small tray just in case i drop them. At 61 my fingers do not work as good as they should and my grip has gone. A lot of club members are a lot older than me and they will have the same problems with small items.

Its all cheap tackle. It would not enter my head to buy any of it.
Some of there hand tools are just about ok? As my late father called it - jacky knacky snappy in two 😂😂

Don't want to start another thread.

Has anyone fitted the new power drive to their machine? I am thinking of buying one for my wm18.

I would like to know if there ok before parting with my beer credits.

I machined a 291mm length of aluminium today and my arms are dropping off with all the winding.

Mines 2007. No strut. Good idea though. That said I have to apply a bit of nip on the quill for accuracy.

Hi. Just caught up on this. I have this machine also. It has the same problem only when you plunge I have a bit of quill lock on to steady it. Putting the lock on moves the centre of the quill about 15 thou! I mentioned in another thread somewhere that the housing casting has a flaw in it like the casting was incorrect. It does not noticeably open or close when I tighten the quill so I think it's just a poor machined fit in all the parts. So long as I use the same setting I get accurate enough results for what I do. I ain't making watches. I did not notice the flaw for best part of 5 years.

We have to remember these are hobbyist machines made to a price and Warco will only have so much margin in them. Just to be clear I am not knocking Warco. I have had good technical back up when I most needed it.

I don't know what they are but Cro fittings probably make them for 5" gauge.

The email i received came from alerts at model engineer. It was a basic enquiry with no signature no email address anything else-in a way of contacting the sender or identifying them.

Not today but Saturday was pretty grim. I took my loco to the track and after two laps retired with no water going in the boiler. Frustrating but it happens.

Un hooked the tender and disconnected all pipes and Started to blow the boiler down and clean up. The wind was quite strong and the tender decided to roll of the track onto the concrete floor!! You can imagine my horror

We just driven to Criccieth. Brought some RC modelling stuff with me to fit to my Roundhouse loco.

Looks like a good weekend ahead.
