I had a long think and suspected that my gear cutting wasn't as accurate as it should have been. I cut two more 12-tooth gears, but still it kept jamming. Eventually gave in and purchased two 12-tooth and one 18-tooth gears from HPC. Comparing the gears, it immediately became obvious why the gears were jamming - I'd turned the OD of the feedscrew gear too small as you can see in the photograph. I'll turn off the gear on the feedscrew and Loctite (638) a slice of HPC gear.
