I got the position of the idler gear shaft hole in the wrong place. (Actually the right place, according to my drawings, it's just that all the (minute) errors combined to go in the wrong direction and so it ended up in the wrong place. Attempts to rectify the situation only made things worse, such that I now have to find someone to weld it up for me so that I can do it properly. In hindsight, I should have waited to locate the hole until after final trial assembly and drilled it then. Next time I'll do it differently.
