My only practical training was an oxy welding course at a Townsville TAFE night course in 1986. I expanded that into a MEng 15 years later, but that was all in project decision making stuff.

Informally, I grew up in a 'traditional' household playing with cars with my father in the backyard until I joined the Army. As an Infantryman, spent most of my time with soldiers, either in the regimental or training environments, including stints on staff at the old Army Apprentices School and later on the academic side at the Aust Defence Academy. These exposed me to machine tools and people who knew how to drive them.

After I left the Army, I met a retired RAAF instrument fitter who spent as much time with me as I could find, and then spent more time with my younger son. We now go out to the shed and do interesting stuff when we find time. The problem is about fitting it all in.
