First attempt, 1964. Loved metalwork at school, especially forge and rivet work, but absolutely no talent or ability. My pastry cutter was memorably hammered flat and thrown in the scrap bin by the teacher and marked 0/10.
Second attempt, 1970. Summer job at Kay's Lock Works in Leeds. I used to drive the foreman mad with the amount of scrap I produced.
Third attempt, 1976. By now living in London, with two others set out to make a Springbok at evening classes. We figured 3 years and £300. Well.. we did make some frames and a few wheels..
Fourth attempt, 1982. More evening classes, this time in Nottingham. No notable progress, I only know I did it because it is in my notebook, but I have no memory whatsoever. (They say the mind tries to obsure bad experiences...).
Fifth attempt, 2012. Retirement arrived ! How to fill all that spare time I'm going to be inundated with? Equip a workshop and make a Metro. The adventure begins again...
