I am a retired aeronautical engineer Living in Somerset. My Father we a prolific model engineer having built 12 steam locomotives from O to 5 inch gauge. I drove his locos from aged 6 onwards! My main work interest was in aircraft, which I took up starting as an apprentice and later in in various management positions in manufacture and airline operation. Model aircraft and full size flying predominated as hobby interests. With wife, children and a house, I started to put my tools in a workshop in which to repair full size gliders and build an aeroplane. The workshop (garage) soon sprouted a lathe etc. One and a half 5 inch steam locos followed. The second one was paused by a move to Somerset but never completed. Being nearer to the sea enabled a wish to build a boat. A 21foot catamaran was completed and led to various changes of boat and upgrades and much sailing over the next 30 years. By my mid 80's I gave up boating and returned to model engineering having discovered the existence of the East Somerset Model Engineers and their excellent facility with 5 inch and 7 1/4inch tracks nearby. I also discovered there were now electric passenger hauling locos. A 5in class 20 was completed from a Maxitrak kit and performed well. Then followed a 7 1/4in Warship class 42 which is an excellent performer. I so enjoyed this that a 7 1/4in Class 14 'Teddy Bear' was next. It is being sold to provide funds for a 7 1/4in Stafford steam loco kit that is about to be delivered.
