90 forum posts | Does anyone have a drawing with the dimensions of the boiler for Don Young's Horwich Crab design??? I'm working on a long design project of a 5" LMS Fowler 4P (2-6-4- tank), which has a parallel bellpair boiler.. the Crab one looks very similar and might be what I need.... if it can be designed in to fit..
Thanks del. |

10 forum posts | Hi Del, I'm fairly certain that the Crab boiler is not the same as the Fowler 2-6-4T boiler. The Crab boiler was a one-off Horwich design where the 2-6-4T boiler was a standard Derby design - possibly G8S as used on compounds etc. Sorry I can't be more exact as I'm away from home and don't have access to my books. 90 forum posts | Hi John.
Whats the barrel diameter & length.. then whats the length of the foundation ring section? I presume the foundation ring width is nothing special, and slips between frames as standard for 5" gauge?
Hi Ray, I know the boilers on the real engines were different, but model engines aren't so picky... so long as it looks similar outside proportions and is a published design (to please my boiler tester).
I sometimes wonder why I started this project in the first place..... basing the running chassis on the Enterprise, but stretching the frames out has proven such a difficult task... and understanding the drawing information (or lack off!!).
Cheers guys Del |

![]() 517 forum posts 57 photos | Hi Del, The barrel is 5.625" diameter and 13.375" long. The firebox is 9.25" long at the bottom and 0.5625" shorter at the top ( the backplate slopes). The overall width of the firebox is 4" between the frames. Hope that helps. John |

17 forum posts | Good Morning, Could anyone out there that has built the Don Young 5" Crab help me with advice. Could you say what size Blast Pipe that you are running with, and what are the fittings for on the elbows at the bottom of the steam inlet Standpipes for. Don mentions Condensate Traps in his articles in LLAS. I thought they were for the lubricators at first but, I think I am right in saying, that these feeds go straight into the piston valves. ![]() 517 forum posts 57 photos | Hi Keith, Haven't built one so can't help with the blast nozzle size but the elbows are indeed connections for a condensate drain valve. They are piped to a valve mounted behind the rear cylinder drain cock and operated by the same linkage.Details are shown on sheet 8 of the drawings (bottom right). John |
