I have a little play in the cross slide on my Myford super 7 with the power feed, there is some slight front to back play I plan to take the feed screw and nut off for closer inspection can someone tell me what the thread diameter and tpi should be ?

Thanks H

Hi H

depends on whether it is metric or imperial. Imperial is probably 1/2in acme 10tpi. I have play in my metric one. I made an add on piece of nut (the d shape of the myford nut) with jacking screws to maintain almost zero play. Mine is about 4mm thick (2 threads) if I remember rightly, so I don't loose much cross slide travel when the stop hits the add on nut. Use the same mounting screws as the myford nut and grub screws to jack the add on off to keep a " tight" action. I just slacken the holding screws and tighten the jacking screws a little then retighten the holding screws. Bit of a blurb here I hope you get the picture.

Harry,

Have you tried adjusting the cross slide to "eliminate" end play as detailed in the Myford S7 handbook? (page 29 in my copy).

It is virtually impossible to eliminate play in a cross slide throughout its travel as there will always be more wear in the normal operating region. A little play does not really matter on a lathe as the tool only works one way if you know what I mean. Play in a milling machine slide is wholly undesirable.
