829 forum posts 1 photos | I have a GE Motor P/N 5KPM40KG78BX Label info is: 1/15 HP, 115/230V, 50/60 Hz, 1 Ph, 3450/2850 RPM, Cap 5 mfd There are 5 wires (plus ground) exiting the motor: Black - Red - White - Yellow - Green. There is no terminal block or mounted capacitor (i.e. the capacitor is to be wired externally) . Resistance checks show: Black - Red = 45.9 Ohms Yellow - Green = 20.3 Ohms Black - White = 0.6 Ohms Black or Red to Yellow or Green = open circuit I need to wire this for 115V 60 Hz (including capacitor). It would be nice if I could reverse it too. I'm guessing that the Yellow-Green pair is the main winding and the Black-Red pair the start winding. I presume the capacitor goes from White back to the main winding. Does that sound right? What's confusing is the dual voltage specification on the label .... I don't see that with the wiring that I have. All I can think is that it's been wired internally for 115V (presumably since it was bought locally - Canada attached to a small vacuum pump). I'd appreciate any (relevant) advice. Edited By Sid Herbage on 17/09/2011 01:49:13 |

829 forum posts 1 photos | Hi Nick, Yes, I had stumbled on that in a Google search and copied the images. At first glance, it looks like the same motor that I have, attached to the same vacuum pump and the same chassis. I had hoped that zooming in might give me some leads (rotten pun). In fact though, this motor is a different supplier (Fasco rather than GE) so I presume it is an alternative source. I didn't really proceed down that path any further but your mention of it brought me back and I did some image processing and zoomed in. As well as some cosmetic differences, there is a slight colour coding difference (the Fasco has a Blue wire, I have Green) but the other colours are the same. The wiring diagram is still a bit indistinct but I'm trying to see if I can reconcile the Fasco diagram with the GE motor. I had assumed the white wire came via a centrifugal switch to a capacitor connection (hence the slight resistance measured). However, the Fasco diagram has it connected to line so I think now it's probably coming via the thermal cut-out that the label says is in the motor. |
