173 forum posts 7 photos | Hi. I am trying to dismantle my Elliot progress 2g due to oil seals and bearings giving out. I have been able to dismantle up to a point where for some reason I can’t get the top of the quill out of the casting. I think that there must be a section that splits away from the gear wheel but I can find it. Can anyone who as dismantled one of these drills please let me know why this section is not moving, and what to do. Thanks |

![]() 418 forum posts 15 photos | I have just dismantled a Union (Boxford) pillar drill. I don't know if the Elliott has the same type of quill assembly but the top part on mine mine looks very similar to yours if the photo is showing where the pulley will fit. If, in the picture, the parts showing inside the casting is a gear that engages with a larger gear on a parallel lay-shaft and the part at the end contains drive dogs for the direct driving of the quill, then it is almost the same as the Union. On mine there is a grub screw in the conical part of the casting that holds a spacer between two bearings in place. Slackening the grub screw allowed the assembly to slide out but I think it needed a little encouragement with a brass rod inserted up into the casting and a couple of light blows with a hammer. Having shifted it once it seemed to slide back with little resistance under 'hand' pressure upon re-assembly. Of course, I could be wrong and the Elliott is different from the Union. I am only going by what I can see in the photograph.

173 forum posts 7 photos | Thanks Chris. From what I can see it looks like someone has completely damaged the screws on the shaft. I have managed to remove part of the machine. However I still can’t get that gear wheel to move out of the way. |

Maybe if that was released you might get somewhere. I only know this as I made a new fibre gear wheel for another Forum member some months ago, his had ruptured and came to me in three pieces I hope that helps in some way Brian |
