I'm rebuilding an 71/4" gauge 0-4-0 GWR dock shunter and I want to fit an axel driven water pump between the frames. can anyone advise me of the ideal size of this pump 3/8" or 1/2" ram etc?

Thank you in advance.

My last loco, a 7 1/4" BR Standard Class 5 had two injectors and on a couple of occasions we have had to dump the fire rather quickly when the pressure dropped too low and the injectors failed to pick up. Trainee driver! Panic sets in because the tender hand pump which had a 3/8" ram was slow to make an impression on the boiler water level.

I plan to fit an axle pump on my next loco and will use a 1/2" ram because I will fit a bypass valve and the surplus will be returned to the tank.

Good luck with the rebuild!
