Clearing size hole??

Just looking through my LBSC drawings for Lifford Hall and note that the holes for the bushes on the coupling rods at the two extremes state ¼" clearing.

Am I correct to assume that means clearance holes?

From memory LBSC produced 3 versions of his Hall design - Lickham Hall was an updated version of the original, Ivy Hall was the original and Lifford Hall was a version created for Reeves. (I am sitting about 1/4 mile from Lifford Hall as I type!)

Ivy Hall was described in Vol 113 of the ME and a quick look at the text says that LBSC wanted the crankpins made from silver steel - 1/4" for the leading and trailing so the coupling rod bushes need to be a running fit on that, eased to allow axlebox movement as necessary.

I suspect that will be a bit of a closer fit than clearance for a 1/4" screw or bolt - ream 1/4" perhaps?

I purchased most of my castings etc from Reeves in the late 70's and at that time it was called Lickham Hall.  Family life and work got in the way of making any significant progress, but now have the time and equipment to get started again.

I have just managed to acquire some of the ME Ivy Hall articles so need to read them in depth.

I have memories of Lifford Hall in Kings Norton, B'Ham, from my childhood when I lived in Brum. I assume Reeves renamed Lickham Hall to Lifford Hall because they were Birmingham based in those days.

From memory the name Lickham Hall is a play on words. The engine is based on a GWR Class named after the homes of minor British aristocracy and I believe it was a popular prototype for modellers.

Rather than model an actual engine, in his usual style LBSC went for performance rather than scale accuracy and, to annoy the rivet counters, called his engine the "Lick 'em all".

Now I typed this in, I'm worried I dreamt the story and it's complete nonsense!
