I am tidying up my 1928 motor car, and I would like to smarten the cast-iron bits of the engine. Can you recommend a suitable paint (etc) which will cope with brush application to a smooth but elderly cast iron surface? It does get to 100C now and then - and probably rather more round the exhaust ports. I do not need a large quantity - perhaps a litre max. And satin black or a dark engineer-ish colour.

I am not looking to paint the exhaust manifold in the same way, but if you have any ideas which will work on dark-red glowing iron, do say ...

Thanks - Tim

Tim try Halfords or any reasonable car accessory shop and ask for "engine enamel" or "engine lacquer". It should be available in a limited range of colours, probably black red green and blue. Intended for just the job that you want to do.

Sperex make a VHT paint that is OK on exhausts in my experience, I can't recommend an engine enamel from personal experience but there seems to be plenty of choice. I would imagine the paint for loco's and traction engines has to deal with the same sort of temperature range as an ic block so should be plenty of personal experience here.

Hi Tim,

I have a friend who owns a MGB and I helped him with one or two restoration jobs on the car. He painted the engine and used e-tech engine enamel. I remembered the name as he gave me some bits and bobs at the time which were in the cardboard box the paint tin came in.

He swears by the paint and seeing it a couple of weeks back it looked as good as the day he painted it which is over a year ago. I just checked Tim and put "engine enamel paint" into ebay and you can find it there, 250ml tins in various colours.

I have never used the paint and can only tell you of my friends experience with it, but it may help.

Ron
