Undertype Steam Wagon

I have a Myford ML7 and want to have a crack at an undertype Steam Wagon once I'm done with my current project (taking a while as I want it just right, but the evenings when I can't get out to the shed in order to maintain a harmonious relationship doesn't stop me doing research!). Ideally I would like it to be capable of pulling at least my weight.

Is it realistic to expect to be able to do a majority of the work on such a model on my ML7? I have neither space nor budget for a bigger machine or mill.

Is something like the 2" Clayton a realistic proposition? I thought a wagon would make more sense as there are likely to be less components I would have to farm out elsewhere.

Thanks,

Jon.

You should have no problem with a Clayton on a Myford ML7, but you'll need a vertical slide for the milling work. The wheels aren't too large to turn, and you can even turn the crankshaft from solid, because I've done it.

Good luck with your project.

You will be able to machine it on an ML7 ok. I remember others remarking that it needs more gearing down to the road wheels, perhaps via a countershaft under the chassis. Without this it is said to be very fas,t and a bit difficult to control.

Thats great, thanks chaps. I saw one for sale recently that had a dog clutch arrangement and an intermediate gear shaft, sounds like a sound modification. I do have a vertical slide but its unused in its waxed paper; I've not been brave enough to try it.

I'm beginning to wonder if it might be more interesting to generate a design of my own, not based upon a specific model but taking inspiration from. A modified small stuart engine could provide my motive power, and I could design it around my capabilities at home. I'm worried that a smaller engine might not be so gratifying to build and use, but am limited by what I have here.

I'll do a bit of sketch work.
