Found this strange compass in an autojumble a while back, for a quid.

Strange in that it is scaled 0-90-0-90 rather than 0-90-180-270.

Suspect that it came from some piece of surveying equipment but do not know what. I would love to know. Any suggestions.

Thanks in anticipation. frown

Hi there, Mike,

Your device is the indicator from a tangent galvanometer.

I remember using one during physics lessons at school but that was a long, long time ago!

I suggest you Google 'tangent galvanometer'.

Best regards,

Swarf, Mostly!

Thanks Swarf.smiley You are a star.

I was off down completely the wrong path, it is good to know what it is at last. I saw it on a stall at an autojumble and it looked a 'very nice' thing; particularly for a single pound! I cleaned it up - it was pretty grotty - and have wondered ever since.
