6 forum posts 8 photos | Hi Everyone I am Hugh From Alcester Warwickshire I have a 1991 Harrison m300 . In all ranges except the lowest on it sounds smooth and quite normal , In the 58 and 260 it sounds a bit rattly is this normal the chuck runs smoothly enough. What is the best oil for the top and bottom gearboxes can someone recommend a supplier the boxes have been recently flushed and filled with what I have been told is the correct oil. |

257 forum posts 35 photos | Hi Hugh, Good advice would be for you to join the Yahoo Harrison User Group. There are loads of files you can access and download including oil charts. Plenty of other useful info as well. You can also access and download a pdf copy of the manual, which has the lubrication charts. Top gearbox is a thin ISO 68 hydraulic type oil. Bottom gearbox I am currently working on grade update comparisons but its an ISO 220. Think some oil traders on Ebay actually list specific oilsfor the M300. As for Brands, you will never go far wrong if you can get Castrol in economic quantities. The machine capacities are much less than you would think. As for gearbox rattles i would say that they are never really welcome. There is a few Youtube videos where there have been similar issues which at the end of the day have just been put down to wear and tear with no real cost effective solution. Its an easy job to lift the gearbox lid and check for visible damage, but avoid running with it off as oil will fling everywhere. I would just make sure you are correctltly lubed up if nothing visible is obvious. Malc

I wouldn't say my M300 was rattly in any of the speed ranges, but it certainly isn't quiet. I rarely run at top speed, as there is a distinct whine. Probably due to spur gears in the headstock rather than helical. I use a standard ISO68 hydraulic oil in the headstock. For the feed gearbox I use a straight ISO220 oil. Andrew |

I recently removed my gearbox to replace a chipped tooth which caused a similar rattly noise. Mine does not rattle in any speed ranges now. |

6 forum posts 8 photos | Hi Peter thanks for the reply I thought a chipped tooth might be the cause, although when I looked a few days ago nothing was evident ill have another look. Why hydraulic oil I thought EP gear oil would be the stuff. I do Have the book on the lathe but most listed are no longer current Hugh |

149 forum posts 48 photos | Beware of just picking any old ISO 220 grade gearbox oil for the quick change box. The Harrison M300 calls for a specific grade of gearbox oil that does not contain EP additives. Certain gearbox oils containing EP additives are known to attack yellow metals such as bronze and brass, which can be found in your M300 gearbox. For Shell Oils the following name changes/equivalents apply Shell Vitrea 220 -> Shell Morlina S2 B220 Shell Tellus 68 -> Shell Tellus S2 M68 Both of these are available on ebay in small quantities. |
